Screen has hp logo and says press the ESC key for startup menu, but is not responding

Try a hard reset. Disconnect the power adapter (charger). Remove the battery. Now press few times the power button. Yes, with no power the laptop will not start but the idea is to drain any residual power left inside your laptop. Put the battery back and try again.

The laptop doesn't boot up always.

I would try the following:
1. Remove the battery completely. If the computer boots properly several times in a row, then the battery may be causing the power supply to do strange things.
2. If you have experience removing laptop components, try removing the hard drive. Because you say the screen goes black (I assume the system powers off) sometimes after the HP logo, I doubt its Windows or a software issue.
3. If HP has a diagnostic CD you can boot to, try that.
4. It may be the power supply acting up. If it charges the battery, and if you can boot to Windows with the battery, try getting a new power supply.
5. Otherwise, it may be the motherboard of the laptop.

Start-up problems

From the sounds of it, you have a problem with Windows or your HD. If it doesnt start in safemode, I'd suggest these things in this order (and each step being more severe, so try your pc after each): take out your battery and unplug the power supply then hold down the power button for about 2 min, resetting your bios to defaults, a HD self test, and then reinstalling your OS via recovery cds or partition. There is a lot of information on how to do all of that on HPs techsupport site. If you dont have a partition, you never received cds, and you didnt make recovery cds, then your going to have to order them from HP for about 20$-40$ Good luck
