Because the hardware differs from the sr201 and the pav 533 you cannot use the recovery discs of one model on the other. You have two solutions. First, you can order your recover discs from HP for around $25 by calling them at 800.hpinvent. Second, you can use an OEM copy of windows xp and use your xp key that is on your computer. You may have to call in and have it activated but they will do it.

Restore hp pavilion dv7 1464nr to factory settings windows

Step 1:
Which operating system ?
Restore Hp laptop factory settings without a Restore Disc Turn on the HP laptop. When the blue HP screen appears, press the "F10" key repeatedly until the "Recovery Menu" appears. A progress indicator informs you of the time before the recovery process is to take place. Click "Next" in the Recovery Menu. Decide whether you want to perform a nondestructive or destructive recovery. A "nondestructive recovery" does not format the laptop's hard drive or erase any personal files on your laptop. However, a "destructive recovery" formats your laptop's hard drive and erases any personal files you have on your laptop. Click "Yes" to execute a "Normal, nondestructive recovery." The restore process begins and your laptop restarts. Alternatively, to execute a destructive recovery, click "Advanced." Click "Yes" to start the "Destructive recovery." The restore process begins and your laptop restarts.

Restoring with CDs Back up all crucial user files if you are able to do so. If your computer will not burn CDs, use flash drives of 4GB or higher to store your data. Alternatively, you can use your network to transfer files. You can then back up your data to CDs at your leisure. Detach peripheral devices such as removable media drives, USB drives and your printer before recovering. Also remove any additional hard drives by disconnecting the cable from the back of the computer. Leave your monitor, mouse and keyboard attached to the computer. Shut down your computer. Place the first recovery CD in the CD drive. If your recovery files are written on a partition, you may be able to select system recovery from the splash screen and your computer starts. Select the recovery option you would like to use. To perform a destructive recovery, click the "Advanced" menu option. Select "Destructive Recovery" and click "Next." To perform a non-destructive, or system, recovery, click "Next" from the opening screen. Watch the computer while it is recovering to the factory settings. Watch for any errors, as the computer will wait indefinitely for a response from you, slowing down recovery time. Also, you may need to insert additional recovery CDs as the recovery program requests them. b> Restoring With Recovery Manager Click the Windows "Start" menu, type "Recovery" in the Search field and press "Enter." Click "Advanced Options," choose "System Recovery" and select "Next." If you are prompted to use Microsoft's recovery program, select "No." Choose the option to back up your files, if you haven't done it already. Once that is complete, choose "Next" to begin reformatting the drive and returning the system to factory settings.

My compaq presario recovery cd ask for A:>>what is

Desktop or Laptop ????....
Unfortunately, it is likely that your computer will encounter some form of system error, malware function or hard-drive crash that causes the operating system to become unstable.
To help computer users resolve these issues, HP includes the HP Recovery Manager in each Compaq Presario.
Use the Recovery Manager to recover your system without the need for any additional software CDs, technical support or repair service.
The recovery process should only be used as a last step in troubleshooting your computer, as all personal data files will be erased during the recovery.

Close any programs running on your computer and remove any unnecessary hardware devices that are connected to the computer.
Restart the computer. Press the "F11" key once your computer begins to start up again and before the Windows logo appears.
The HP Recovery Manager will automatically launch.
Click the "System Recovery" option and click "Next." Select "No" in the Microsoft restore window that opens and click "Next."
Select the "Backup Your Files First" option and connect an external hard drive or insert a blank DVD or CD to store the backup files.
Follow the instructions in the wizard to select the files you want to save.
Click "Next" to begin the restore process.
The Recovery Manager will reformat the hard drives and recover the system to a functional operating condition.

I did a system recovery with the cds provided with the laptop for my compaq 2175 but when it restarts it gets stuck on the Windows XP screen and never gets past that point. How do I fix this?

You may have some malfunctioning hardware. When the computer boots up and you see the compaq screen, you should be able to perform hardware diagnostics by pressing one of the F keys. Look in the bottom right hand corner. My guess is going to be malfunctioning hard drive, especially since the computer is a bit "older" and age is rough on laptop hard drives.
I believe the key for diags is F9

How can i restore back to factory condition without the disc?

Use the following steps to recover the computer from the Windows XP desktop:
  1. Backup files from the My Documents folder and from other folders you may have created.
  2. Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.
  3. From the Windows XP desktop, click Start , All Programs , and then one of the following options:
NOTE: The following options are for HP computers. Compaq computers will have similar options (for example, Compaq Tools).
    • HP Tools , and then HP PC System Recovery .
    • Hewlett-Packard , hp pavilion pc tools , and hp pc system recovery .
    • PC Help & Tools , and then HP PC System Recovery .
c00370937.jpg A recovery Welcome screen appears.
  4. Click Yes or OK to continue the recovery process. The computer restarts to the recovery program. If another welcome screen is displayed, click OK to continue.
  5. Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
    • To perform a system recovery, click Next , and then click Yes
    • To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced , (select Destructive Recovery ) and then click Next .
CAUTION: A destructive recovery will format the hard drive. This will delete all the information on the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came with the computer.
  6. Read and respond to each window and screen that appears.
  7. After the System Recovery is complete, the computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the PC finishes the setup.
NOTE: It may take a long time to complete Windows setup. This time varies and may take over several hours. Recovery times are most affected by using recovery discs that were ordered from HP and/or the amount of files that were stored in the user account folders (for example, My Documents and the Desktop).
  8. Before using your computer, update and protect your computer. For more information, refer to Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP .
  9. Re-install applications that you added after purchasing the computer, and any files that you have backed up.

System32 dll file is missing or corrup

There is a good possibility that you are having a hardware failure of the Hard Disk Drive, causing the windows error.

Either in the BIOS or in the F12 boot menu should be an option to run diagnostics, see if the hard drive fails. If it does, then you need to replace the drive.

If not, you will likely need an XP Installation CD so you can boot to Recovery Console and run the command CHKDSK /P to try and recover the operating system

Computer seems to be in a loop when turned on

What you are having there is a problem with the booting up of windows. most likely a corruption. The best thing to do here is to have your computer taken to a local technician or a friend who knows about computers. Have your hard drive files recovered by connecting your hard drive to their computers. Then after that you could either try to use your windows xp cd to do a repair installation (However its not a guarantee that you will be able to recover your files with this step.) or to have a full Operating System reinstallation. Hope this helps.

Having problems with my compaq Persario 2500

this problem occurs when you try to update drivers in the computer..sometimes windows XP cannot update the driver and that corrupts system.ini file as it has a lot of bad entries..Due to this you will get this error mesage..No its not due to virus.its due to an attempt to change system.ini file

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software
