Question about Saws

1 Answer

DeWalt 742 Flip over bench/chop saw. 110v. Approx 7 years old, and used infrequently. The saw tries to start and momentarily spins for a second or two. Then it seems to trip out 'internally', and if left for a minute or two, I can repeat this process, but still fails to start. 240v/110v Transformer is working perfectly. The saw was last used in April 2010. And kept in the tool shed, although it may have got a bit damp. All my other power tools are working fine, and kept in the same shed.

The motor or brushes are burn by symptoms you refer. If you can,try to open the saw case and look inside. At the motor check for the cooper wires and the brushes if there some "carbon like burn".

I had the same problem after a 3 year lack of use. I found that I had not cleaned it properly before storage and there were some shavings and dust up inside the machine. I stripped it and gave it a full clean and it is fine now. I think it's just very sensitive to any pressure applied to the blade before start up tripping the safety...

    Good luck....

LG flip phone will not turn on. LG logo lights up screen for approx 5 seconds, then goes dark again for approx same amt of time then repeats. Tried taking out battery and putting it back.

You should try a factory reset, just google the make and model for instructions to do the factory reset, if that doesn't clear the issue you need a new phone.

start with the capacitors. you may have 2, a start and a run capacitor. also you can spray the inside of the motor with WD-40 and turn it by hand until it feels loose.
i was just looking through old post and saw yours.

If you can get your hands on a continuity tester, do a continuity check from the plug through the flex ,the switch, armature and back to the plug .It should be possible by a process of elimination to discover where the break is in the circuit.
It might be simply that there is a break in the cable where it exits the mains plug or where it enters the chop saw

most probably it is bit of timber on the bottom of the saw assembly...

1. switch off the saw
2. remove power plug
3. remove screw and clear protector assembly
4. remove centre panel (as to changing the blade)
5. remove blade and clean dust furrow below it from all debris
6. re-assemble in reverse order
7. mount safety protector assembly
7, connect power cord
8. start in shor burst and switch immediatelly off, after blade stop spinning, check blade assembly if not wobbly.

this should solve your problem.

if you find this advice useful, please do not hesitate to leave comment and give me your vote4 fo rme, thanx!

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

With power off grab both sides of the blade and try to rocking (NOT SPINNING) the blade in opposide directions on each side of the balde. Then while rocking the blade, see if the armature teeters inside the motor.

It it does have excessive movement then the rear motor bearing is probably worn excessively.

I have to ask if this is a 110V cut off saw and your trying to use it on 220V because it will produce the exact symtoms you described.

I also note that you did not mention if you had changed the brushes. Worn brushes or weak brush springs can also cause the symptom you describe.

Hopefully this gives you something to work with.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Did you sense an odd smell? Try removing the brushes, there should be two, it could be one is worn too short or the connecting wire is broken.

Metal chop saw blows breaker

Is there anything else running while you are cutting? If not is the breaker 15 amp or 20 amp. If its 15 amp, I would change it to a 20 amp breaker. Make sure the wires are thick enough to handle the extra load. If this isn't the problem check the cord from the saw to the outlet.

Good luck!!

Reciprocating saw stops reciprocating

your missing a tooth on a large round gear in the gearbox.

when the gear on the engine rotates into the position where the little engine gear spins because there is no tooth to come into contact with the engine runs but the gearbox doesnt spin, hence no reciprocation, but engine runs.

if you bump the blade it will start going again, but when you cut it will stop offasionally in mid cut. you can repair this but stop using it the engine gear will be destroyed otherwise

I have a dewalt dw303 that you can use for parts, I need a new trigger or something the motor is dead and I found a new saw. go to craigslist.org, rochester ny tools section and look for dewalt dw303 that is my listing. for ten bucks ill sell you all the gears you need. i think it is close to the same model, i am sure it is the same gearbox.

try opening your gearbox, im positive that is what is wrong.
