SOURCE: have an hp pavilion desktop that wont power up.

You can purchase a power supply tester, they are not that expensive. Here is a link for some and if you want you can shop around. Make sure to get a 20/24 pin tester.

Also if you do have a bad power supply here is a replacement.

SOURCE: lost 18V AC adaptor- can I use one made for laptop with 18V output?

I don't know if I would try this or not. there could be a difference in the amps and usually a charger is designed to shut off or go to trickle when the battery is fully charged.

Sorry Gregory, gave you the wrong number.
You could try something like this. Various voltages and currents with different adapter plugs. This is on Ebay UK but I would think there are others, don't know where you are.
Ebay item number: 201154296095

Specs:
1.Rated Input Voltage: AC 110V or AC240V
2.Vibration Input Voltage Range: AC95V-265V
3.Input Rated Current: 0.4-0.6AMP
4.Input Power: 90W
5.Efficiency: >88%(TYP)
6.Out Power: 90W
7.Output voltage: 15V/16V/18V/19V/20V/22V/24V(0/+0.5V NOLOAD): DC15V-24V
8.Output voltage: 15V/16V/18V/19V/20V/22V/24V(-0.4/0.5V@rating load): DC15V-24V
9.Output current: 15-20V/4.5A@22V-24V/4.0A: 4.5AMP(max)
10.Overload protection: YES
11.Short Circuit Protection: YES

How to fix problem of jvc crt tv model av-21l31 power ok no video/audio no display with lines coming from flayback

Look at the horizontal output transistor then the fly back transformer.Check ALL the voltages coming from the power supply. One or more of them have to be missing for the audio and video to be gone at the same time.

I have a black frame around the picture and I would like to know how to get rid of it?

It sounds that, the secondary power supply voltage output from main power regulator section is less than normal. What is the exact model number to your JVC TV?

I have a Behringer xenyx 802 audio mixer and have lost the power supply. I tried to buy a replacement, but cannot find any in stock. I'm very resourceful and thought I'd make one. The spec sheet calls for...

No, you can't just jump the pins together. The power supply in the mixer needs two separate 18-volt AC inputs because it makes two supply voltages, +15 and -15 volts.

The external supply is just a potted 36-volt transformer with a center-tapped secondary. I bought an open-box Behringer (not your model, but similar) that was missing its supply, and found this transformer which works fine. (I actually did find a couple of sources for a replacement Behringer supply, but it cost more than I paid for the mixer!) Just connect the three output leads to the appropriate places on the mixer's PC board. In mine, I removed the original input connector and soldered a pigtail with a 3-pin connector from Radio Shack to the PC lands, then attached the matching plug to the transformer leads. You'll also need to provide an enclosure of some kind to prevent contact with the line voltage input to the transformer and to protect the thing if you carry it around.

This is a very complicated unit. There are several safety circuits involved. I hate to say it but you don't have many external fixes. It would be better to have a repair shop check it out for you. Sorry but thanks for using fixya.
