In short, you have to either
The modem is communicating with the servers at your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to give your computers an IP address. The ISP may have your modem set up to be issued only one IP address. Thus using both USB and Ethernet could be restricted by your ISP.
The IP address is most likely a dynamic IP that expires after a few days or weeks, unless you bought a business account that has a static IP (which is used for hosting permanent websites).
When a computer is not communicating with a Cable Modem or you shift between the connections on the modem, it may be necessary to re-establish configurations. The following can be steps to reset all components to re-establish configurations:

Hey I was given a high speed Bell Sympatico interent system and I even had 7 different modems installed in one year and even including 2 new 2wire modems..
Firstly all of the problems were firstly related to the fact there was no Bell high speed cable actually in my area, even though i had paid for a high speed interent service for years too.
and the problmes were next directly also to the mostly pretentious, incompetent Bell technicians.
Do first use an interent speed test site to verify your actual supplied interent speeds and do always tell the ISP that you want real high speeds and real service from them rightfully ..
FINALLY THEY BELL SYMPATICO WOULD CORRECT THEIR SYSTEM PROBLEMS , AND FINALLY GAVE ME EVEN A FIBER OPTIC CABLE CONNECTION TOO, AND IT WOULD RUN GOOD FOR 3 WEEKS next till another fool, a Bell technican make some other LINE changes and my system became slow, problemed,
THUS SO MANY TIMES now I had discovered firsthand what the right hand of BELL,ca giveth the left hand can take away.. for it seems everytime they the techs do make new line changes my own ISP address next would change AS A RESULT too and lead to some of the new problems...
So I again called Bell tech and they next tend to do a ping and do something else and so for another short period their interent system would work till... the other hand had taken it away..
Continue to give them the techs hell for they deserve it and tend not to tell the truth as to what the real problems are.
If you have a 2 wire modem you do not need firewall software too and you can turn it off.

SOURCE: Dynamode Internal Fax Modem 56K
i had same problem trying to receive faxes until i changed phone connections.
according to a motorola manual (link below) this has something to do with being connected to a "proper analog phone line".
i had the phone line running from wall to a newer gateway (maybe 8 months) dec 07 to a maybe 2 year old compaq. kept getting that loop current error on the compaq when trying to receive a fax until i elimated the gateway connection and plugged the wall right into the compaq.
here's a link that might help: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/12655/ENG/Motorola.htm
see section 6, troubleshooting. hope this helps...

SOURCE: ethernet vs. usb
FYI for those people trying to use a ethernet and usb cable from a cable modem - it may work for a while but it won't work forever - your ISP will only allow one IP address out of the modem unless you pay for additional addresses (then you need a switch). Each device you have on the modem is fighting for that IP and eventually it will just quit working (if it works at all).
If you want more than one computer on your network (on the Internet or sharing printers/files, etc) then you need a router or a gateway (cable modem/router combo which I DON'T recommend).
