Question about Sony KDF-E55A20 55 in. LCD Television
Some of the fans are encased in areas you can't see. If you have a meter and want to determine which fan is in failure, you can find the small 3 wire fan connectors and measure the voltages on the wires.
Black wire - Ground
Red wire - 12v
White wire - 5v (RPM wire)
Zero (0) volts on the RPM wire means the fan isn't rotating. You will only have about 10 seconds or so to check the fans, so measure quickly and turn the TV back on to measure the ones you missed when it shuts down. Even a rotating fan can have a bad RPM sensor internally to the fan.
NOTE - these fans operate the same way they do in computers, providing rotation RPM to the motherboard for monitoring.

You are correct that a 4 flash is a fan problem. It could be that one or more of the fans is not turning, I have also seen a failure of the fan rotation sensor that tells the TV that fans are turning cause this problem. Lastly, in rare cases a power supply problem can cause a 4x failure, when the supply for the fans fails.
