Check to see if the cable is properly connected. Both on the TV, Video and DVD points. If it's a SCART, does it have a small switch on it? Also check settings to see of there might be a PAL/NTSC issue.

My sister-in-law has exactly the same problem and is a common one with this unit.
I've spoken to a technician who says that:
1. Hitachi are withdrawing from Australia and there are VERY limited service centres left
2. The problem is a chip on the main board and depending when the TV was made will determine whether the chip is a plu-in or soldered on to the main board - if it's the latter, you'll be up for a main board at around $400
3. He couldn't get the price of the plug-in chip because he couldn't get through to Hitachi.

sounds like you are using standard audio/video cables (yellow, blk., wht) in the component conections on either the tv, vcr or dvd player. If you intend on using component connection you will need to use different cables.
