I am having trouble installing a sparkle Nvidia Geforce 8400GS 512mb graphics video card (M/N SFPC84GS512U2LP) on my HP pavilion a1620n. It keeps saying at least one of the display adapters are incompatible. What do i do?

Ok, I waited for a lot of time and closed the session coz I assumed you were disconnected. If problem persists then let me know and I will gladly see you through it.

hi thanks for following up. no i am still unable to get it to work. i did what you told me and tried to choose primary graphics device under boot options in bios, but there wasn't even an option for that.

  • vincent_c_yu Nov 10, 2010

i think my card might be just a normal PCI but I'm not sure. i did what you asked and changed it to PCI -E anyway, saved changes and rebooted but now my monitor is not picking up a signal. now i really don't know what to do cuz i can't even see anything. (I'm on another computer now)

i am still unable to get a signal from to the monitor after removing the bios battery. any other ideas.

  • vincent_c_yu Nov 10, 2010

ok i was finally able to get a signal back to the monitor screen after removing the BIOS battery. so selecting PCI didn't work and PCI-E causes my monitor to lose signal.

Do you see something like advanced BIOS options? If not then Note down the list of all BIOS menus and options under them , and post them here. Do this and I guarantee that I can resolve your problem.

i pressed F1 to enter BIOS setup. Tabbed it over to Advanced and listed below are the options available.
    Plug and Play [OS]
    Primary Video Adapter [PCI]
    PS/2 Mouse [Auto Detect]
    Onboard PATA/SATA Adapters [Both]
    SATA MODE [RAID]
    USB Legacy Mode Support [Enabled]
    Onboard Lan [Enabled]
    Onboard Lan Boot ROM [Disabled]
    Onboard 1394 [Enabled]
    Onboard Audio [Auto]

There is an option called primary video adapter, that is what your graphics adapter is. Select it and change the setting to PCI-E, coz thats where you have installed the card. Save changes, reboot and let me know if it fixes the problem.

That shouldn't be a problem. Just remove the BIOS battery and hold for a minute to restore the defaults. The battery is located on the motherboard near the CMOS chip. Since you have already tried PCI , I am starting to think that your motherboard does not support this card. Let me know when you have restored the settings and we will keep trying.

Did you disconnect it from the power before trying this?

The idea is to remove all power sources that can keep the settings intact. If problem persists, just remove the graphics card and the system will swith back to on-board graphics

Well all I can see is the error message that you have received is probably right(that its not compatible). Anyways lets try one last thing. Get me your chipset model number again. I remember you said something starting with 945. Get me the whole thing, so that I can find you a driver. Lets see if that will make the chipset support the card.

Download drivers for GF8400GS 1024M graphic card

Is this a retail card or did it come pre-installed in your computer?
This one is common I believe in HP and Sony Units, and I am not sure if the reference nvidia drivers are going to work.
You can always try it, (visit nvidia.com and click on the find drivers button, then enter your product and version of windows)
IF you get a warning that a supported device was not found, then visit the HP (or whatever make you have) to get drivers from them. They aren't as good as updating drivers as nvidia or ATI would be but they should still work.

You do not need specific 'Galaxy' drivers. You need the right NVIDIA drivers.
Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
and type in on the page: Geforce, Geforce 8 Series, GeForce 8400GS,
Your used Operating System, Your used/wanted language and download.

About geforce 8400gs gen2 tc1g 64bit ddr2, it is okey to run in window7 32bit. i already install and run but only read 512mb.

There should be no reason why this card won't work with Windows 7 32bit, it could be as simple as your Graphics drivers are out of date. I recommend downloading the latest Windows 7 drivers for your card at the Nvidia website.

Just remember graphics RAM and SDRAM are two completely different things so they don't add up.
As far as I know the 8400GS is a 256MB card.

Assuming that you have installed the drivers for your new board, go into Control Panel, select Device manager and Display Adapters.
Dissable the onboard adapter and enable the NVidia card.

That can not be the right driver for your video card. I suggest you roll back to its previous driver. Look for the latest version of the driver for your video card.
