After a new heater core is installed, do I have to put coolant in my radiator? Righ now it only has water in ir.

Your radiator should always have coolant in it, water does work, but there is more of a chance that your vehicle will over heat, and water alone could cause a rusty build up. I suggest you buy some 50/50 coolant OR you could also buy undiluted antifreeze and dilute it yourself with water, but I would still suggest mixing it 50/50.

Heater fan blows good but only blows cold air. Is it the heater core? The thermostat? How hard are they to replace if i do it myself?


Check the heater core by checking the hotness or coldness of the 2 tubes at the firewall that lead to the heater core.

If both tubes are hot, the heater core is fine. If both tubes are cold, then the heater core is plugged up and will have to be flushed out or replaced.

The thermostat, if stuck open, will delay the heating up of the heater core. It's not hard to replace the thermostat.

Thermostat Removal & Installation 4.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Some of the coolant
    • The upper radiator hose f150_42_thermostat.gif

    • The bolts (A).
    • The water outlet connection (B)
    • The water thermostat and paper gasket assembly (C)
To Install:
NOTE: The water thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • The water thermostat
    • The thermostat
    • The water outlet adapter
    • The bolts
      1. Torque to: 80 inch-lbs (9 Nm)
    • The upper radiator hose
    • The coolant
4.6L/5.4L Engines To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

How do I replace my heater core on a 1988 my Ford f250


Hello there, here are steps to help you through:
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • After making sure the engine is cool, drain the coolant from the radiator into a suitable container for recycling. It is always good practice to replace the coolant with fresh coolant after replacing the heater core. The old coolant will contain corrosives and contaminants that will accelerate deterioation of the new core if you reuse it.
  • Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core connector pipes on the engine side of the firewall.
  • Working in the passenger compartment, remove the glove box for better access.
  • Still working in the passenger compartment, remove the seven screws that attach the heater core cover to the plenum assembly (the plenum assembly is the protective housing into which the heater core is mounted.)
  • Disconnect the vacuum source but leave the vacuum harness attached to the plenum cover.
  • Remove the plenum cover.
  • Remove the heater core from the plenum chamber.
  • Reverse the procedure to install the new heater core.
  • Make sure the radiator drain plug is closed, that the heater hoses are properly tightened.
  • Make sure the new coolant is properly mixed with an equal amount of clean water (distilled water recommended) to produce a 50/50 coolant/water mixture.
  • Fill the radiator with the proper type and amount of fresh 50/50 coolant..
  • Start the engine and check for leaks.
  • Check the coolant level after driving the first few miles and top off the coolant level (after engine cools).

Heat is luke warm and coolant temp gauge not getting to operating tempature. installed a new thermostat with the valve up on the thermostat. removed the heater control valve to make sure it was functioning...


this is probibly a blockage in the radiator or water pump issue start by flushing the radiator,then check that water is flowing thru the radiator and water system.

LOOKING AT HEATER CORE TOP HOSE COOLANT FLOW IN BACK OUT THROUGH THE BOTTOM HEATER CORE HOSE CHECK WATER PUMP BYPASS HOSE SEE IF IT GETS HOT.IF NOT COULD BE BLOCKAGE AT BYPASS HOSE FROM WATER PUMP OR WATER COULD BE FAULTY GETTING TOO WEAK PUMP COOLANT THROUGH SYSTEM.IF COOLANT GETTING HOT GOING TO HEATER CORE THE HEATER CORE AND COOLANT SYSTEM NEED FLUSHING OUT.

Heater only blows Very luke warm air on low speeds. when the speed is increased to 3-5 the heat goes away and it only blows cold air. Any suggestions


Read all of these instructions before starting this job.
First test your heater core for flow by disconnecting both heater core hoses from motor and forcing air from an air compressor into one of them watching for flow from the other. If you have no flow then you may need to backflush your heater core - it is possible you have blockage in it. Your local auto parts store has a backflush kit you can buy that will have a backflush valve ( to be added to your supply heater core hose ) and an additive to put in your coolant system. The kit will not include new coolant so you will need to get that too. Install valve and connect a garden hose.Run motor specified time in the kit. Remove lower hose from your radiator and turn on the water from the hose full blast. Watch the coolant coming out from your radiator to see if any chunky stuff comes out - also watch for the color of the flow. Run water until it comes out clear, then shut off water and disconnect garden hose. Allow system to drain, reconnect radiator hose and cap flush valve. Refill coolant system, turn heat on high and run motor until it is warm. Top off coolant in radiator ( be careful - the pressure may cause coolant to spray out when you remove cap - put a rag over the cap before you remove slowly). If you do not have warm air at this point you may have a bubble in the heater core and may need to block rear wheels then raise the front of the vehicle until the radiator cap is higher than the heater core. Restart vehicle and turn heater on high . Check coolant level in radiator and top off, then cap radiator and shut off motor. Lower vehicle and start again with heater on high. If you still have no heat then your heater core may be plugged. To check, remove both heater hoses from motor and force air from an air compressor into one of the hoses, watching for flow from the other hose - if no flow then core is plugged and needs to be replaced, but if you have flow then you still have an air bubble in the system and need to purge using the above steps until you have heat.

CHECK AROUND WATER PUMP AREA.AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING FOR LEAKS.THE MECHANIC WHO PUT THE WATER PUMP ON MAY FORGOT TO PUT SEALANT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WATER PUMP GASKET CAUSING LEAKS.LOOK AROUND THERMOSTAT HOUSING FOR LEAKING.IF THERMOSTAT SEAL WAS DAMAGE DURING INSTALLATION IT WILL CAUSE LEAKING.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND RADIATOR .CHECK RADIATOR TOP AND BOTTOM HOSES FOR LEAKS AND CHECK HEATER PIPES AND HEATER CORES HOSES FOR LEAKS.IF ALL HOSES GOOD.CHECK FOR LEAKING CORE PLUGS.

Does any coolant flow through the intake manifold? I've replaced my radiator and thermostat an my car is still overheating. The heater core recently blew. I have a new water pump but not installed yet....


Yes coolant flows through the intake. Are you sure you didn't put the thermostat in upside down? That's about the only thing that can cause a rad or heater core to blow. It should be installed so the spring part goes into the block.

Engine overheats when heater pipes connected


I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.
