LCD monitor has no display

Hi there. I have a question. I own a Sony Vaio VGNS150 notebook. Here is the problem:

The laptop seems to start ok, but there is absolutely no display on the lcd screen at all from the time the laptop starts. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your response! I have a bit more information this time. After starting it and turning it off several times, it finally started up. The LCD display seems to be fine.

So the pc finally starts up, but, it freezes up very often. I'm not referring to the type of freeze up associated with viruses and spyware. It seems as if the pc actually crashes. If I turn it off and turn it back on, it will still sometimes not display anything on the screen (by the way, when nothing is displayed on the screen, the pc does not boot up). The times that it DOES display something on the screen and starts to boot successfully, it ALWAYS freezes up at one point. It freezes up even in the middle of booting windows.

I also noticed the bottom of the laptop is VERY hot, so I'm thinking it could be constantly over heating (but I can hear the fan is working), do you think that could be the issue?

Same prob. PC works, but no display. Fan extremely noisy and extremely hot. Prior to the display failling, the PC was extremely slow and constantly would freeze up. Mine is a VGN-SZ38GP/C

It's possible you have a problem with either the LCD or with your system board or CPU. Plug an external monitor into your laptop and then boot it up. If you get a picture on the external monitor, the problem is your LCD. If you still get no picture, you likely have a bad system board or processor.

It is certainly possible that thermal issues are causing the computer to freeze. Even if it sounds like the fan is working, there may be a problem or a loose connection with your heatsink or fan, especially if you notice unusual heat coming from the machine.

Another possibility is that you may have a bad RAM stick. Try taking them out and reseating them. If possible, borrow RAM from another computer and test with the known good sticks.

There are a few other possibilities which are not as likely, but I'll list them anyway:

-Bad hard drive. This may cause a problem with booting up, especially if the boot process fails at the same point every time you try. However, this alone wouldn't explain the display issue.

-Loose CPU. This can cause problems like the ones you mentioned, however CPUs rarely just come loose. You can open up the laptop to try to reseat the CPU as long as you're very careful.

-Bad CPU or system board. Always a possibility.

If you can't get it up and running on your own, it's time to take it to a repair shop. They'll be able to diagnose far quicker, actually having the laptop in hand, as they can test parts. Here in the forums, we can only try to point you in the right direction. Hope this helps some.

Hook a spare monitor to the video output of the laptop, if picture okay! the LCD panel display is defective and most be replaced. But if symptom is the same on both screens it indicates a bad Video Graphic Card normally built into the motherboard.

After using an external Screen on my GRX600 the LCD screen is no more available by pressing FN/F7

Hi,

Connect the laptop back to the external monitor. Do a manual switch from Control Panel, Display/settings tab/advanced button/search for your notebook's monitor settings and adjust it back to the laptop.

I think this problem has been caused by a Microsoft update which has caused problems with the Sony function application.

Regards.

Sony vaio vgn nr160e laptop - no display (intermittent). Attached monitor shows display fine and laptop works fine. Screen used to flicker intermittently (last few days).

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

My sony notebook working but the screen went all white

Hi elibert, do the following: first connect your notebook pc to a regular monitor and use the function key(fn) fey on your keyboard to toggle between the monitor, the laptop screen & both monitor and laptop screen. If images display on the monitor, you likely have a display problem.First resit the LCD panel & then the video inverter card (video card). If problem persists, try replacing the relatively cheaper video inverter card b4 replacing the more expensive LCD panel altogether.Do this if you are a pc support technician else,i'll recommend you take it to an experienced technician or an authorized service centre.Cheers!

Plug an external monitor into the notebook. See if the diplay is clear. If there is no problem with the display there the problem is with your lcd. You can check for a loose connection by disassembling the notebook. If the connections are ok you have probably done damage to the lcd from the impact of the fall. Now if you are not familiar with working with notebooks internally I would not reommend opening it. Check your warranty with the manufacturer to see if you are covered otherwise take it in for service if you can.

Hope this helps you
