What I would do is take your circuit board from the old DVD Drive and put it in the new one. Just make sure that the hitachi drive matches the same model # as the other. Now if your getting an unplayable disc error its because your laser burned out and need replacing or that your motor that spins your game needs to be re-lubed because those are the two that can cause it. Email me if you need help.

Xbox 360 DVD Drive Not Reading Games Only DVD,CD after replacing the dvd rom

If you replaced the DVD-ROM drive yourself, some newer Xboxes do not recognize and/or function properly with older drives. I tried replacing a drive in an older Xbox with an older yet DVD-ROM drive, and it would not work. When replacing a DVD-ROM in an Xbox, it is advisable to use the same model drive, as the Xbox does strange things when you introduce different hardware. The url of a page is below that details the different drives that Xboxes use. See if your new drive is the same as the old one, and if not, that is almost certainly the issue.

When I put a game into the Xbox, the screen says reading. then "Open Tray" is displayed. Will not play games.

Hi you need to replace the whole dvd drive as the laser is not dropping down to stop scratching the disk, the problem with replacing the dvd drive is you need to get the exact same drive and their are 5 different types but when you do get another drive you need to take the circuit board off your drive and swap this with the circuit board on the new drive, its called the control board,

now the reason you need to put your control board on the new drive is due to the fact that the dvd drive is married to the firmware on your xbox so only that control board will work in your xbox so if you fitted a whole new drive and didnt swap the circuit board over thats on the bottom of the dvd drive your xbox would not play games ever again so you need to put your control board on the new drive to ensure your xbox recognises the dvd drive as being the one from the xbox.

their is no way around this without hacking the drive and doing this will ban you from xbox live so its not worth doing when you can just put your control board on the new drive and have a fully working xbox.

the fault you have is covered by warranty for 3 years so if your xbox is less than 3 years old get on the official web site and request a repair they will then send you another fully working xbox but you wont get much warranty as the one they will give you is a refurbished one. check the date on the back of your xbox to find out if you have any warranty left.

if your going to do the work yourself then use google and search for xbox 360 repair guide and this will tell you how to take the case off the xbox as its not easy to do, once you have the case of getting the dvd drive out is easy it just lifts up and you pull the wires out of the circuit board, you then need to check the make of dvd drive and get the same one then if you take the case off the dvd drive by undoing the 4 screws on the bottom you will see the circuit board that needs keeping with the xbox undo the wires and data ribbons and keep this circuit board as this will need to go on the new dvd drive.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

My XBOX 360 will not read my game disks, how do I fix this problem?

The open tray issue is normally linked to the laser itself. You do NOT have to replace the entire drive, as doing so may cause you further problems.

If your 360 is under warranty, send it in to be replaced.

If not, then there are things to try!

Open the console (using the various online tutorials) and remove the DVD-ROM drive. Open the drive and you'll have access to the laser. Get a Q-tip (cotton bud) and moisten one end with some boiled water. Rub gently over the lens of the laser, then use the other end to dry. Try the game again.

If the above doesn't work, purchase another drive assembly, matching what you already have. You could just buy the laser, but there's no point if it's something other than the laser (and you get one with a new drive). If you have a Hitachi drive, make sure you buy a Hitachi. The same with a Toshiba-Samsung. Keep the same drive type. New drives can be purchased from Ebay. For Toshiba Samsung's, either the MS25 or MS28 will be fine as the insides are exact. Hitachi's are likewise: any version will do.

Here's the good part: you don't need to mess with the firmware on your drive, since the problem is mechanical. Carefully remove the DVD logic board from your faulty drive (the circuit board inside the DVD-ROM itself) and get a Sharpie/Marker and tick it/sign it/etc. Something which you can distinguish one from the other. The boards will look the same and you don't want to mix them up!.

Set your board to one side and get your replacement drive. Open it up too and remove the board in the same way. Now put your board in this new drive, carefully replacing the cables (there are guides online for this too). Close the drive and try it.

Because you're keeping the PCB from your drive, your DVD key will match still and you won't have any configuration problems!

Plays dvd but not games

When you replaced the DVD drive did you swap the circuit board (on the bottom of the DVD drive when you open it up).

Every DVD drive is "paired" with the Xbox 360, so you need to open up the DVD drives, and swap the green circuit boards on the bottom of the DVD drives. Should work after this.

Had hitachi drive, installed samsung drive. Now it won't play games

If you had a Hitachi drive you need a Hitachi drive to replace it, unless you want to get into very complicated stuff and messing with firmware, etc.

You can get a Hitachi drive for about $28 from this site: http://parts.consolerepairguy.com

All you have to do is put the old circuit board from the DVD drive (open it up and take it off of the bottom) into the new DVD drive.

Hope that helps!

I have an xbox 360 which contains a philips/benq

ok....if the dvd you bought is the EXACT same part #, and it does not have a board made to it, you should be able to just "drop it in". the system will think its the same thing. if its a generic or different part #, then you will have to "flash" the BIOs on the board for the dvd you are trying to use. its a pain, but first you have to find the correct flash version. if that is needed, there are many forums on upgrading and flashing that unit. id put in the new drive and at least try it
