Question about Kenmore 75180 Wall/Window Air Conditioner

1 Answer

My window a/c compressor won't turn off, thus making the room extremely cold.... Kenmore 17,5/18000 btu model 580.73189300. Earlier, the front grill was iced over and i have since thawed it out (the 1st time i have had this problem with icing). Also, the compressor seems to remain on even when unit is in the "fan" mode.....

My kenmore 12000 btu portable air conditioner keeps switching to DH mode out of AC mode

That means that it is dehumidifying. Is the air coming out still cold? I assume you have tried using the mode button to switch it back? Is the air extremely humid? Perhaps it is humid enough that the machine needs to dry the air before safely operating as an AC. The manual is available here:

Kenmore side by side refrigeration running but not getting cold

whats the model number? But if there is no cooling at all is a compressor problem. Now it can be a mechanical problem or just an electrical compressor failure or just a bad relay. Removed the front grill at the bottom of the unit if there is a lot of dust on the condenser must likely the relay is bad is not then compressor may have fail do to a freon leak, high amp to compressor because poor ventilation, or just time

Lets look at the output of the system first. Take your square footage of the area you are trying to condition and times it by 15. We try to get 15 Btu's per square foot of air conditioning. If your area is say 10 by 15, you have 150 square feet; times it by 15 = 2250 Btu unit is required. If you have a 5,000 Btu unit, it should be more than enough to cool the room. If this is correct, the problem may be because you have the unit set for Dry. In Dry mode, the compressor will cycle less frequently than if on Cool. If in fact the unit is on Cool, you may need to lower the temperature setting to fool the sensor from turning off the compressor prematurly. If you still can't cool the area, your unit has an issue with either refrigeration or air circulation and will need to be serviced.

sounds like the compressor may have died on you. the compressor isnt running you might as well trash it sorry for the bad news but it probably isnt worth trying to replace a compressor in a system like that it would drive you crazy and take forever if it could even be done.

Hello, I can assist you.

If the unit is supposed to turn off and it doesn't, it will be necessary to check several things.

  • First, is the unit cooling properly? See the section entitled "The air is cool but doesn't seem cold enough."

  • Next, is the temperature of the room adequately cool? If the room temperature is cold enough try setting the thermostat to a higher temperature. If the unit then seems to work properly leave the thermostat set to the higher temperature.

  • If the unit is cooling properly when it is turned on and the room is not cool enough the problem is probably that the unit is trying to cool an area that is too large for its capacity. Use the following chart to find the appropriate size air conditioner to use:

AREA TO BE COOLED / CAPACITY (BTU/HR)

100 to 150 square feet = 5,000

150 to 250 square feet = 6,000

250 to 300 square feet = 7,000

300 to 350 square feet = 8,000

350 to 400 square feet = 9,000

400 to 450 square feet = 10,000

450 to 550 square feet = 12,000

550 to 700 square feet = 14,000

700 to 1000 square feet = 18,000

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce needed capacity by 10%

If the room receives a lot of direct sun, increase needed capacity by 10%

Add 600 Btu/Hr for each person in the room if there are more than two people

If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000-6,000 Btu/Hr.

If the room size is too big for the air conditioner you have two possible choices. Either decrease the room size by shutting some doors or partitioning off an area of the room. Or, increase the BTU of the air conditioner for that room by installing a different air conditioner with a higher BTU rating.
