Question about RCA P46924 46" Rear Projection Television

3 Answers

I have a RCA model P46924 projection television. Im assuming it has a convergence problem, but not sure that anything is actually wrong with the board? The screen is bowed on the top, bottom and sides. About 1.5 inches on all four sides. Is this to far to adjust through the fine coarse adjustment? I cant tell anything wrong with the colors horzonital or vertrical chips, not too sure exactly how to test correctly. They read fine with a multi-meter.

Well what is that procedure, I'm well capable of doing this. The tv worked fine, or the customer was told it worked fine, when they bought it, then they moved the tv laying screen down. When they got it home the screen was bowed. I don't have a service manual but could buy one if this is definetily the problem and can be adjusted through the menu. I have worked on tv's for 14 years but do not have much experience with projections. I need to fix this myself.

I will look closer for coolant leaks, but from quick visual, I didn't see any. I will look closer.

  • Justin Stout Nov 10, 2010

Thanks that's where I found it too. Kinda expensive but worth it if it does the trick.

  • Justin Stout Nov 11, 2010

I will let you know for sure, but that sounds correct. What board would it be on?

  • Justin Stout Nov 11, 2010

Yes, is it the digital convergence board? I have checked everything on that board, but will double check. Does the diode short out or just read low? What is the component reference number. I will pull one leg and check it out of circuit. this board was the first one I check and couldn't tell anything from a common diode check.

  • Justin Stout Nov 11, 2010

Yes it has this board, but what diode? I have checked them all for shorts in circuit. I haven't pulled them outta circuit and checked them. None of them read shorted or open?

  • Justin Stout Nov 11, 2010

K thanks I will check it out.

I suspect if you look carefully on the back of the set you will find the chassis number is a PTK 195. If you find that is the chassis inside this set, you most likely have a single bad diode.

Confirm chassis number to me and I will tell you where to look and how to replace the diode.

set has a small circuit board above main boards, let me know if yours does

LISTEN, IF IT IS 195 CHASSIS IT WILL HAVE A SMALL BOARD MOUNTED ABOVE THE MAIN BOARDS, board will be about four inches wide and eight or nine inches long, does your set have that board?

about ten diodes on that board, it supplies the voltage for the convergence circuit, the two on right that are larger are ones you need to look at, there is also a IC on that board that can cause same problem. You are looking for either of the two larger diodes to be shorted. If not that verify voltages off of the two diodes, one will be a positive voltage and the other a negative voltage

check the diodes and the voltages if they are good.

Seems as though some coolant from one of the CRT's has leaked on the convergence board. Cleaning it off may resolve this problem. Also check U1001 and resistors around it and STK IC's too....
Be careful when working on CRT boards as the flyback holds leathal 20,000 volts even when unplugged. So be sure to discharge it before working on the convergence board.

    Hi,

When they layed it down that's when some of the coolant fluid got on the convergence board from one of the CRT tubes. The gaskets on the tubes have warped and weakened due to heat exposure over time...... never lay a RPTV down.

Take the deflection board completely out of the TV and look for an oily substance on the component side and clean it off with some circuit cleaner or 100% alcohol. The oil substance is the coolant that's dripped on to the board.

let me know what you find...

If the colors look right and it's just a geometry problem then it's not the convergence board - the geometry of the image needs adjusting. Those adjustments should be done on a static test image, from the main menu. If this is not enough you will have to do it from the service menu. This is a very delicate job that should be left to a pro. Luckily it's going to be a relatively cheap one to fix.

The procedure is described in detail - with diagrams - in the user manual. If you no longer have it you can buy it from here

I have a RCA home theatre modle P46924 and im seeing three different colors on the side how can i fix this

I know a very common problem with this set (which rarely has convergence problems).

Look closely where model number is on back and I suspect you will find in tiny print this is a PTK195 chassis.

If so there is a board above the main boards (3 inch wide and about 9 inches long) that has only a few plugs and 4 screws holding it in.

There are on that board if it is there about 10 black diodes---two side by side are much larger than the others. What happens and can be checked with board out is one of the two larger ones is shorted-----there are a few other parts but 95% of the time one of the large diodes is bad-----1000 prv (peak reverse volts at 3 amp and fast switching)

See attached photo of typical diode with band at one end(polarity of band end is positve).

Let me know if questions.

Did you replace the STK convergence IC's yet? If not, thats your trouble, or you have a plug in the wrong place. i doubt if the yolk is bad, as that would most likly blow out the horizontal output transistor and the set would be dead. Good Luck, Please do not forget to rate this thread.
