Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have an old home that has a very space drain pipe. I bought a new Maytag top load washing machine. The drain pipe is too large for the drain pipe. 2 plumbers have told me the drain pipe will have to be replaced which means taking a wall down to get to the existing pipe go through concrete, etc. for replacement. Is there another option?

Whirlpool now own Maytag and with a W/P top load machine there is an adaptor which reduces the diameter of the drain hose. Not knowing the diameters of your drain hose, or the plumbing of your house, I can't say for sure that this is a remedy. However it's worth trying. Contact a Whirlpool stockist and see if the adaptor is the correct size for your new Maytag. Or you may be able to drain the new machine into a laundry tub which then flows into the house drain. This is a normal way of 'taking up the slack'.
I'm surprised your plumbers didn't suggest it.

Maytag Centennial Top Load Washer drains as it fills.

The water is probably siphoning out of the tub. Your drain pipe is either too low or the drain hose is down too far into the pipe. Take the drain hose out of the pipe and lift it high. I'll bet your problem goes away

It is your water pump. If you don't know what you are doing it could be tough.

Maytag legacy series washer not holding water

Same problem here. But according to Maytag Service, the draining pipe may be too deep inside the draining tube on the wall, thus creating a siphon effect and not allowing the tub to fill.
Their suggestion is to ckeck the pipe and make sure no more than 6-8 inches are inside the draining pipe. This should take care of the suction. We'll see, Imma do that when I get home.

Washer won't fill up

The problem is most likely your drain. If there is no air break at the drain,( a gap where the hose goes into the pipe so air can enter) Your water will siphon out of the machine. Also make sure your drain pipe is higher than the tub of your washer and you only want about 6 inches of the drain hose sticking into the pipe. If you have water coming back out of the pipe when the machine drains, you will need a plumber to clean the pipes or replumb the drain. New washers pump out faster than older ones did and they need a good drain to handle the flow.
