Probably the check valve has failed. It apparently is where the pipe goes into the tank from the compressor.

Check the reset button on the motor to see if it tripped. The motor may be overheating. Some motors have an internal breaker and they have to cool off before they restart. Also check the pressure switch. Move the switch back and forth ( on and off ) and listen for a click. If it doesn't click with low to no air pressure then the switch is bad.

SOURCE: craftsman 1 gallon direct drive oil filled wont build air pressure

It sounds like you may have a broken reed on the diaphragm plate. This is located at the block. Remove the cover, and look for a cast metal assembly with fins. It will be attached to the side.

SOURCE: Craftsman 30 Gal. 150 PSI Not building air over 45lbs

The compressor valve may have a faulty gasket or seal, and maybe leaking air internally. Or the compressor might be going downhill. You can try to replace the valve seal and see if that makes a difference, otherwise you need to replace the compressor.

You should not have air coming out of the vent cap. From what you've stated here I believe your piston rings and/or cylinder are damaged to where air is getting past them and going back into the crank case. It's possible you have a frozen valve plates so check them on your way to the piston and cylinder.

Hello I have a 20 gallon kobalt model 033204. I just replase pressure switch but does same thing. When I tur on the compressor jus build 50 psi and shuts off.

This usually occurs when the motors internal thermal / amp breaker opens due to overload or weak breaker. Use an amp gauge to test for too much amp draw. If amp draw is normal, then problem could be the in-tank check valve leaking pressure back to the pump overloading the system, or weak capacitor or weak breaker. Bypass the breaker temporarily if the amp draw is normal to test system. Good luck

The pump used on your compressor was incorporated into different designs thus needed access to oil fill from one side or the other. Part number for oil plug was std-220 or 27642, but you can use just regular standard pipe thread plug with square head. If the oil plug fits the other hole. Buy plumbing parts at Lowes. Good Luck

Hi have a cosmo air compressor that will only build up 25 lbs of pressure instead of 12olbs?

If the compressor is older or had a lot of use the rings might be worn. Try a compression test on the cylinder to see if there is bypass in the rings.Try this onlt if it keeps running and doesn't build pressure. If it builds up and stops at 25 lbs. the problem is different it would be in the pressure switch. You can then try to increase the the shut off pressure in the switch by turning up the adjustment screw. if this doesn't work I would then change the presure switch for a new one.

I have a 5 gal, i hp craftsmen compressor, 3 years old, used once a year to blow down sprinkler system. Compressor ran up to 120 lbs upon turn on, would not cycle off. manually shut off unit and turned...

Oil free pumps do tend to blow the piston ring (not too expensive) available at searsparts.com. Remove covers to pump and manually turn crank until piston is at top and look at the condition of the cylinder neer top, If it looks scratched, order cylinder kit with piston ring. If it looks good and shiney, could be the valve plate in the head. There are reed valves that tend to break. Run pump however with covers removed and check with soapy water for air leaks and repair as needed (air leaks under the cover will prevent unit from filling). Good luck

I have an upright craftsman compressor which is VERY slow at building pressure. The shut off is 150psi. When I use the unit, and it turns on, it runs forever to build back up, even when im not using it....

Your unit should fill within 5 min. Compressor may have worn cylinder (assuming oil-less) , worn valves or just leaking. Easy test. Spray soapy water on all connections/fittings including drain valve and regulator while compressor is running. Repair as needed. If no leaks, remove plug from outlet, remove cover and examine cylinder. Turn crank by hand till piston is all the way up into cylinder. Examine carefully the condition of the cylinder close to top. If the cylinder is scratched or worn then pressure is leaking between piston/cylinder and will not fill tank properly. Replacement cylinder kit available at Sears, cost under $50. If no leaks and the cylinder looks good, then valve plate may have broken gasket or reed valves. Replace as needed. Good luck with your project.

Craftsman compressor wont build up air after 25 lbs

The pressure switch is defective. You can order a new one from http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action. If the compressor builds up to 25lbs and will not shut off, then it could be the safety valve.

I Have a 5.5.hp oilfree air compressor that builds air up to 45 lbs an stops building pressure and keeps run.will not shut off

Is you air regulator working? I suspect your reed valves in the head need replacing as they may not be holding pressure over the 45psi that you mentioned, and are allowing the air pressure to defeat them which allows the psi over 45 psi to bleed back into the air compressor cylinder.

Craftsman 3 gal., 1.5 hp air compressor: won't auto shut off, builds only 40 lbs pressure, air leaks from the 2 holes in oil filler cap?

The compressor will not auto shut off until it reaches the preset pressure which is usually around 100-130 psi - your problem is leakage of air from the oil filler cap suggesting that you have a failed internal valve.

WILL ONLY BUILD UP 25 LBS PRESSURE AND WILL NOT SHUT OFF

The reed valve may be damaged or not seating correctly. You can check this by taking off the cylinder head which is very easy. Could also be excessive wear in the cylinder / rings or a broken ring or the drive slipping when the load exceeds 25 lbs. The shut off is ok as it will not work until the pressure is higher.
