Question about Hard Drives

HDD volume mis-reported by XP

Hi. You've probably been asked this loads of times, but at the risk of boring the pants off you, I will ask again!
I have just installed a new 250GB sata HDD. I used a XP (home) disc to format the HDD before installing XP and re-loading all my drivers, etc.
However, XP is only reporting the HDD size as being 127GB (ish) under both 'My Computer' and in DOS using the 'DIR/W' command.
Can this be fixed without reinstalling XP?
I would be most grateful for any advice you could give.
Regards, Roy Stothard

Well you need to check if there is any fault in the 250GB HDD for that there are 2 options one is connect it as external to ur pc and see the total disk size.. else take it to the service centre with your warranty...

Feel free to askmore...!!

Thankyou

Hi,
Seems like your hard drive is malfunctioning, try another HD. That 80gb is already obsolete and the circuit board might have some defect.
If you could pull out the underside circuit and clean the gold contact points and try it again, if still not working...... buy a new one!
Check also the jumper and cable it must be in the "master" configuration.

Hope that helps you out!
Thanks for asking FixYa!

HDD passwords are designed to be 100% secure and there is nothing available to reset or remove the HDD password whether the password failure is caused by human error or HDD defect.
Users must ensure they have regular backups.Unfortunately,a new HDD will be required and is not covered by the standard warranty.

Hi Again - managed to sort out my own problem by accident.
I was installing a new bit of kit and needed to access the BIOS. The reboot time came and I gave the three-fingered salute (CTRL +ALT + DEL), and lo and behold it went into the chkdsk routine! Then there was a delay whilst it took 2 hours to check the disk, but there were no errors.
As a matter of interest I then ran diskkeeper (without problem) and noticed the report was saying the MFT (Master File Table) file was way too small - an 98% capacity - and that I should increase it's limit. I did and ran the defrag again. I now have a very healthy external HDD that is as happy as me.
Hope this helps others.

Cant load xp onto sata HDD

To use XP with a SATA drive you'd need to use the HDD disc software first as XP didn't come with preloaded SATA drivers. This is what is preventing you from installing XP on the drive. Once the driver is loaded you should have no problem. If your new hdd didn't come with a disc then you can download it from the hdd manufacturers website under the support link. Hope this helps.

Hi,
After plugging ur HDD, verify the device is detected or not in Device manager and Try Partitioning Again GUI mode (means in XP).. or follow the steps..

1- Go to Computer Management, Click Disk Management
2 - You will find you External HDD in the Right side
3 - Just Right Click the Drive, if it asks Initialize HDD, just Initialize and Create Partition as u like.

Have Fun
