Question about Dell (8N816) Motherboard
Unfortunately, not really any way to avoid it :(
At the least, to attach a fly-lead instead of a socket would still involve having to de-solder the old socket to get at the power points on the mainboard, and that desoldering is the awkward part - pushing the new one on and just soldering the legs is the easy side of the job.
The soldering of these sockets is actually quite easy, but it's important to have a soldering iron hot enough, and to have good quality solder, flux (unless the solder has it built in), a clean hot iron tip, and if possible a magnifier to make it all easy to see what's being done.
Good luck with it.
