Your remote has worn-out buttons, or are extremely dirty. The buttons that get lots of use, like power, are the first to go. The conductive rubber sheet that makes up the buttons loses its conductivity or gets mashed flat and doesn't make good contact any more. Also, dirt and food (especially if you have kids, who love to handle the remote after their hands have been in the chips!) can get in and gum up the works.

Remotes were never made to be serviced. The manufacturers just consider them a replaceable part. There is conductive material you can buy to repair the rubber pad, but it's expensive. You're probably much better off just buying a universal replacement remote. If you absolutely need the original, there are many vendors online who sell replacements.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Let's try to sort this out. You have a universal remote control which you want to use with your RCA TV. You turn on the TV, press and release the TV button on your remote, and enter an RCA TV code. You then press the ON-OFF (or POWER) button and the TV turns off. If not, you repeat the process with other codes until you find one that turns the TV off. If you are successful, you should be able to turn on the TV and channel up or down through all available channels in your area. If I am missing something, post a reply

You need to "program" your Shaw remote to control your TV, including the volume up/down on the remote.
Take your Shaw remote control, and follow the instructions on the back. If that does not work, telephone Shaw, and ask for technical support for TV.

Can set up th remote control for this tv with the direct tv cable remote

Here's how to scan for TV codes on your DIRECTV remote

1.Make sure your TV is turned on.

2.Slide the mode switch at top of remote to "TV".

3.Press and hold the MUTE button. This is located above the number 1 button.

4.While still holding down MUTE, press and hold the SELECT button until green light at the top of the remote flashes twice.

5.Then enter 991, the green light on remote should flash twice.

5b. Press 1 again (it will flash twice again), then you press the power on button at the very top right.

6.Point remote at TV and press CHANNEL UP button. Tap the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly until the TV powers off.

*If you hit channel up very fast, you risk going past the code. Pressing channel down will back it up. I alway hit channel up very fast till the tv turns off, then back it up slowly till it comes back on.

7.When the TV powers off, press and release the SELECT button.

*Note: If the green light flashes three times before TV responds, then all codes have been cycled through. Our remote controls are guaranteed to program to your DIRECTV receiver, however your TV may not be compatible with our remote control.

Remote control will not turn tv on or off?

You would need the user manual and the specific remote code for your TV to get this work properly. Just send the model numbers of TV and remote to http://manualfox.com/remote.htm and they will come back with a solution.

some tv's default to channel 2 after being unplugged.since it is a older tv ,the buttons on the remote and the tv maybe worn down.on the tv itself try pushing the buttons down a liitle harder. if you have aux or line in/video inputs, scroll down on the channel button to log into a aux channel for the dvd player.as for the remote try buying a cheap universal remote to see if that works.

Hughes Remote works the satellite but not the TV

You have to push and hold down TV and Mute button (for 2 seconds at the same time), then release them at the same time, then push channel up until the TV turns off.  Be patient and continue channel up until the TV turns off.  When it turns off, then push TV again to lock the code.

You were doing fine, but missed to push channel up to fine the code.
