Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a dell studio 1735 laptop that will not charge the battery. At first i thought that it was the battery that was the problem, so i bought a new battery, it worked until the battery ran down, now it won't recharge. I did some research online and decided that I needed to replace the power jack on the laptop. I disassembled everything and removed the old jack (which was OBVIOUSLY defective, but in the process I accidentally chipped off a small piece of the motherboard to the side of the jack (NOT where the 5-pin solder points are). my question is: first, do i need a new motherboard, or does the small missing piece not effect anything? ... and my second question is: On the new Jack I bought from radioshack; where do I solder the five weird hand-like metal pieces from the motherboard, in order: O, 4, 3, 2, 5??

Starting with your original problem. There was no need to buy a new battery as charging of the battery is done by the battery charger. It is very likely that the battery charger was bad. You have not mentioned any thing about the charger.
Thge motherboards are co compact that you can not afford to remove any portion, however small, the motherboard and expect it to work fine. If you power it on it may damage your LCD, HDD and what not. I would not recommend use of this motherboard unless checked fully. To do that please disconnect the HDD, LCD etc and power it on. If there are no sparks then start reconnecting these items one by one till it is fully assembled.
To connect the new jack, you must see how the old one was connected.

There is a short circuit on your motherboard. This is why the power adapter switched off (thermal cutout) and resets after you remove the adapter from the wall power outlet.
You need a new motherboard.

Got a dell studio 1735 lost bios password

The jumper should be right next to the CMOS battery. It is also completely possible that simply pulling the CMOS battery would reset the BIOS enough to get rid of the password.
