There's a few things that can cause wifi connections to not work.

The most unlikely is just an incompatibility between your router and the wifi USB adaptor. There's not much that can be done then, except changing to a different adaptor or router instead.

Things you could check include:-

Make sure the router allows both kinds of wifi speed (B & G types - just to avoid errors while you test it)
If using any WEP passwords, make 100% sure you are using the right one - many people get a password just slightly wrong but are sure they haven't.
Make sure the router signal is strong enough to connect properly.
Make sure your router is able to have enough wifi connections (many are limited to 4, and neighbours may be using your connection too! pushing the router past its 4 limit).
All routers can have security settings tha can block in many ways, so if you didn't set it up yourself originally, whoever did may have put extra settings in place for protection.
Try having your laptop connect to another router - maybe at a cafe, library or friends house. This will narrow down the fact that it's your own router doing something wrong.


The first thing I would try before anything else is:-

If possible, connect using LAN a cable first, as that should work instantly - note that your firewall (if using Windows) may automatically block internet connections, and that would need sorting out in Control Panel first. You would usually use any CAT 5 or CAT 6 network cable (any length), of a 'cross-over' type. A cable of this type is sometimes included in the routers box if bought as new.

The UM175 is not an access point itself, you could plug it into a Craddlepoint and then connect your other devices to the Craddlepoint. Testing was down with a UM175 and a Craddlepoint here:

I have a pantech um 175 usb wireless modem and I don't have the set up software to activate the usb modem. I need the progamming software so I can access the internet.


That so-called "solution" is totally worthless--the link goes to Pantech PHONE website, which has absolutely NOTHING in the way of downloads, for modems or anything else. As for you, Mr. ADRideau, why don't you bother to check your link before posting it?
Sadly, I don't have any answer to the problem, wish I did because my Verizon software won't recognize my UM175.

Dear,

This router is compatible with the modem UM175 but from the manufacturer Pantech for the ISP Verizon. The modem for this router is ISP specific modem and will not work with any other ISP.

This modem is incompatible with this router. Sorry!!!!

My seggestion to you is to download Nework magic pro. it is cheap and will manage your network, router and modem. It is very user friendly.

This solution is verified with 10.5.6
You kinda need VZ Access but only for the activiation of the modem.
1. Download VZAccess for your mac and activate your modem, just connect once with it. It will go through and activate your modem. You only have to do this once. 2. Uninstall VZAccess, I believe it is in the Help Menu of the application itself. 3. Reboot you computer. 4. Plug in your Um175, go to System Preferences/Network and if it asks you to add the Pantech USB Modem say yes, may require password. 5. Select the Pantech USB Modem and enter the following: configuration: default
Telephone Number: #777
Account Number 10digit telephone number plus vzw3g.com, ie: 5558675309@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw
6. click on Advanced 7. under the Modem Tab: Vendor: Sierra
model: CDMA
Check Enable Error correction and compression in modem
Dial Mode: Ignore Dial Tone when Dialing
Dialing: Tone
Sound Off
Click Ok then Apply and your Modem should not be setup without VZAccess Software installed.
