Question about Sony SDM-HS75P/S 17" LCD Monitor

2 Answers

Monitor works fine on power up then display goes black after a few minutes. The green/orange power led stays green (not asleep). If I turn it off for a few minutes it works again for a few minutes. No bulging capacitors in the power supply.

I tried the booting windows F8 test and found that the B&W text display is normal, ie, the screen does not go blank.

I've waited much longer than it usually tkes for the screen to go black but it continues to be ok. Perhaps having the back off the monitor changes the heat situation.

Here's a picture of the power supply. What's the next step?

    I have a XP SP3 installation disk.

I've had the monitor powered up for hours now and it hasn't failed. The only difference between when it was failing and now is that the back shroud is off and the guts are exposed.

The 7 biggish black cylindrical capacitors are all more or less the same temperature. They feel warmish, not really hot. If I send you a picture of the solder side of the board, would that help?

  • sid3489 Nov 11, 2010

do I have to be careful taking the board off, unplugged of course. No chance of a big capacitor discharge?

  • sid3489 Nov 11, 2010

I've had this monitor on several computers: Windows 7, XP and Linux and it behaves the same on all of them, so I don't see how updating video drivers is going to help. The machine I want to use the monitor on is a Intel D495GSEJT mini-itx and I just undated the graphics chipset software a couple of days ago. I don't have a CD drive for this computer. If necessary I can boot XP from a USB drive, but with some hassle. Are you sure?

Thanks very much for your help. I'll do what you suggest.

Hi,
As you mentioned no bulged capacitors in power board but problem seems with capacitors in power board.
Let monitor work for longer time then unplug it and check each capacitor top for its temperature, if any one is warmer than others, replace it to solve the issue.
Capacitor become dried as well due to heat and dried up capacitor lose its capacitance.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

OK, that is why I suggested to take temp test of capacitors in power supply board because temp could be increased when back cover is fixed.
Since back cover is off and power board is exposed that seems helpful to maintain capacitors temp.
    Thanks.

And next possible cause would be dry/ cold solder joint in power supply board, unplug monitor, remove power supply board and check solder side for possible dry/ lose solder joint/ connection.
    Thanks.

Yes, solder side picture will help me to trace any cold solder joint.
Please email me good focus and full size picture at welcomejee@yahoo.com as reduced size picture wont work to see dry solder joints.
    Thanks.

Unplug monitor while its working, this will consume all charge of big capacitor in power supply.
Then you can touch it without any problem.

I do not see any cold solder joint/ connections in picture of power supply board, however, please resolder any solder joint if its color is faded/ dull. Resoldering will refresh its contact. Fix power board in monitor and turn it On, take temp test of capacitors then put back cover temporarily and check, if monitor turns Off, remove back cover and check capacitors temp, you will find few more warmer than others, these are defective and causing problem. Replace them to solve monitor problem.
I been fixed many tv/ monitors in similar problem and capacitor temp test worked for me.
    Thanks.

Power board calls G Board and part number is as follows:
    178917611 ... MOUNTED PWB, G
Available in Sony Part Store for $98 (seems bit costly)
Click on above link, put part number 178917611 in search box and hit red search button to get result.
    Thanks.

Hi Good day!!! Try to run in safemode by tapping f8 while booting. and see if you monitor goes blank (same problem)
Well It's a common problem with sony hs75p
the problem is with the power board's transistor in the monitor

people might try some stuff and may get some results, but trust me it's all luck...

i had the same problem, so i gave my monitor for repairs as it was under warranty and the culprit was the power board (sony calls it the 'A' board). The only problem is u need to have patience as u are dealing with sony here i mean, i got my monitor back, but after 2 tries and with many dead pixels and analog signal being greenish...well at least the DVI port worked fine >.>, which they said wasn't their fault ( i was like...right, so the dead pixels generated all by themselves, huh?..by the way if u are wondering...before giving my monitor...they checked the monitor and it's written in the receipt that the monitor had no dead pixels).... so dont be surprised if your monitor comes up with another problem, after giving ur monitor for repairs to sony

in any case it's 'A' board problem

Thank you for using FixYa
Hope my solution helps you thanks

Viewsonic VP2030b takes 5-10 minutes to start

Open the monitor, examine the circuit boards. Look for small components that look like small cans, these are capacitors. If you see any that look bulged on top, then your problem can probably be solved by replacing these. Check out the following sites;

Sir Help me with my Compaq monitor MV520 it won't turn the power led flashing orange to green continously

it could be th epower supply and it could be the monitor.
power ON button should not flash orange regardless what you do. it should stay green. then orange. not orange to green to orange.
try the monitor on another PC if you can fine one.
the other thing is are the 2 monitor similar (CRT to CRT and LCD to LCD), you can't mix the the two, they will work but need different video driver to function correctly.
