One commercial "data recovery service":
https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US

has the offer: "no files recovered, no charge".

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Can't open Hitachi Neso 500gb external hard drive asking me to reformat?

you could run the chkdsk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to recovery any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive there are many ways of running the chkdsk utility

click start right click on my computer you should see your drive usually C: select properties click tools check now tick both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery on any bad sectors

then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

it will only schedule on restart if its the Primary hard drive with an operating system on it
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer

for USB drives click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

hope it helps

Seagate FreeAgent 500gb Hard Drive not showing up on computer

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap

click start control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties
click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in one box then select

check now start or you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box

(I have found better results ticking the first box then reurn and tick the second box) you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

hope this helps you

When i plug it in it makes a strange tikking noise and does not connect

The ticking noise is not a good sign at all! Try plugging it into a different computer and hope that it works. You need to get the files off of it ASAP.

The tikking sound you speak of is the disks inside your hard drive hitting each other, also known as a hard drive crash. This is BAD news if it is. Your data will not be able to be recovered if it has crashed due to physical damage. Try to get your data off of it as soon as you can, that is, if you still can

Sorry for your loss

A typical sound from a disk-drive that has malfunctioned.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

Dropped my drive...

ok....if there is a clicking sound that usually means the hard drive is failing...if this is the case you need to find a data recovery expert....now the casing and hard drive are separate pieces of hardware so if there is a problem with accessing the data but no audible clicking my advice is to head to your nearest computer shop (an independant and helpful one if possible) and ask them to try your hard drive in a new casing....if that works you only need to pay for the new casing.....there is a piece of software that can fix bad sectors of your hard drive without loss of data but it does require the PC to be able to access the disk
