Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

7 Answers

My PS3 Slim won't get past the "connect controller using a USB cable, and then press the PS button." I've tried the reset button on the controller, but the 4 blinking red LEDs go out and when I press the PS button, they just start blinking again. This indicates to me that there is power to the USB ports, but it still won't recognize the controller. This is true when using either of the two USB ports. Is this a hardware problem on the motherboard? Is there a known fix for this?

How did my question get categorized in Barcode Scanners? This is a Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) SLIM. Some of the recommendations (power switch on back of unit) apply only to the old Fat PS3 (non-SLIM).
Also, I cannot access any reset or restore menus because the 1st thing I have to do upon boot-up is push the PS button on the controller, which is not being recognized. The controller/cable I'm using works fine with other PS3 consoles, so that is not the problem. Any other thoughts?

How do I request a particular expert?
I want to submit my question to: vidgamefixer

    Follow-up comments are as follows:
Do you have access to my question history?
I do not feel that I have reached an expert who has ?hands-on? experience with my specific problem. The 2 answers that I have received have not adequately addressed my problem or come up with a valid solution.
I have eliminated the controller and USB cable as the source of the problem. They work fine with other PS3s. If the problem is on the Motherboard or internals (bad solder joint or ?) where do I look? If it is a firmware problem, how can I access the restore menu when I can?t get past the initial "connect controller using a USB cable, and then press the PS button" screen? Any in-depth analysis would be greatly appreciated! I know that I?m not the only one who has had this problem.
SOMEBODY knows how to fix this!

    Hey FixYa,
You allow users to browse your list of experts, but it is certainly not obvious how to direct my question to one particular expert. Am I missing something here?
I would like vidgamefixer to address my question/problem. IS THAT POSSIBLE?
    Thanks,
    -Dave-

  • davehtuc Nov 17, 2010

OK, so since no one will answer the question: 'can I specify which expert I would like to answer my question?' I gather the answer is NO.

Thanks for all the input, but I have already tried all the solutions suggested so far with no solution.

I continue to request that my question be routed to vidgamefixer.

FIXYA - WHY DO YOU LET US BROWSE THE LIST OF EXPERTS AND YET MAKE IT SO HARD FOR US TO GET THE ONE THAT WE SELECT???

    Thanks,
    -Dave-

  • davehtuc Nov 20, 2010

OK, please allow me to summarize all of your suggestions and the results I found in order to eliminate any confusion:
    1. I tried swapping out the controller - No Change (NC).
    2. I cannot access the restore menu without first pairing the controller with the console - NC.
    3. I am not getting an error message related to there being a bad hard drive (the only message I get is to connect the controller via the USB) - NC.
    4. I did the paper clip reset of the controller - NC
    5. The controller is fully charged and works on other PS3 (as does the USB cable) - NC.
    6. I do not want to enrich Sony by $150.

What else do you guys have for me?

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE BE KIND ENOUGH TO ROUTE THIS TO THE EXPERT NAMED: vidgamefixer ??? (He sounds like he has the experience I need).

    Thanks,
    -Dave-

  • davehtuc Nov 21, 2010

    Hi Again,
You guys must get points for each question answered, cuz I can't get anyone to refer me to my preferred expert: vidgamefixer

OK, I can play that game! I'll just keep re-submitting until I draw him.

If you read my question history, I state exactly WHAT I have tried and what has NOT worked so far, and yet the EXPERTS continue to suggest these things over and over. For example, the last suggestion was to reset the controller when I have clearly stated more than once that I have already tried that. I even itemized (see my 11/19 message) exactly what has been tried and eliminated as possible solutions, yet elix0411 suggests using a pin to reset the controller! SHEESH!

Thank you for taking a fresh look at this!

    pauldonp,

I have tried your step-by-step reset procedure and the PS3 Slim still does not recognize the controller. I have also tried many variations to the reset (hold PS3 while resetting, reset prior to connecting to the USB, reset after connecting the USB, etc.) - all to no avail.

Did you read my 11/19/2010 comment in which I itemized the things I have tried with no success?

I believe that I need someone with some in-depth knowledge of the PS3 Slim Motherboard layout and who can point me to the USB circuitry and/or components that I need to check. Do you know of any of your experts who have that level of knowledge?

    Thanks,
    -Dave-

Hi, have a look at the back of the control and look at the top where the big screw is in the middle at the top now just to the right of that their is a tiny little whole, now turn your ps3 on dont connect the remote with the usb lead just yet now press the ps button on the remote so the lights start flashing then get a pin and poke it in that whole poke it in strait then you will here a little click this is a reset button then let it reset then after a couple of minutes connect the remote using the usb lead and see if that makes any difference,

let me know if it dont make any difference and ill do my best to assist you further ok

a toothpick would be a better poker than a pin as you can push it in a bit harder a pin is a bit small and fiddly so try and get a toothpick or even a thicker sowing needle then push it in strait and not at an angle and you will then feel it click once you have pressed it in far enough.

Hi davehtuc,
So you tried using a pin to reset the controller as there is a small hole on the bottom of the controller.
Since all four red lights are blinking when you plug it into the USB on the PS3, this indicates the controller is charging. Leave it there for about a half hour or so before trying to press the PS button. If the controller still does not respond, it may need a bit more charging before it works.
This can happen if a controller has been sitting for some time. Also it could possibly be a bad USB cable where some power is getting through but not enough to power the controller.
Hope I was of some help!

Hi there, I had exactly the same problem and in the end I solved it by changing the mini USB cable for another. Try that and see if it does the trick.

Hope this helps

If you are having trouble with your PS3 booting up this is a sign that you have corrupted data on your hard drive. The link below will help you address this.

I suspect the issue is not your PS3, however I suspect the issue is the controller. I would try getting another PS3 controller- if the issue repeats- then you *know* the issue is the PS3 is the problem- at which point, you would need to contact Sony to get the unit in for repair if it is in warranty, or see if a local game shop could do the repair for... (best bet is Sony)

Hey,

First have you tried any other controllers, do they all have the same issues? have you tried another usb cable incase theres something wrong with the current one?

If all the controllers have the same issues then it could be a hardware issue.

Update your console to the latest available software
http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm

Settings > System Settings menu. Option 5 Restore Ps3 system.

OR

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full or Quick Format via System > Format. You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).

Now if your machine is still having issues or you can't do a thing on the machine, it does sound like the usb ports aren't working normally, I'd still go for the holding power button reset and trying once more.

Sony will repair the machine for 150 out of warranty.

I fried my old desktops usb ports in the past and of course I couldn't fix it myself, the components are so small your going to have a hard time fixing it. Better to leave it to the professionals with proper equipment.

Welcome to Fixya.

The controller stopped responding. You could try using a pin to reset the controller. There is a small hole on the bottom of the controller.

As soon I I turn on ps3 the screen says connect the controller using a USB cable, then press the ps button. No home screen or anything it seems like it's frozen

This screen is the reset/recovery screen, you can make this occur manually, with the system in standby hold down the power button until you hear 2 beeps.

If you connect a controller using the USB cable can you continue? when you connect a controller and press the PS button it should take you to this screen?

Can't connect orb controller to ps3

Plug the dongle in to the USB port, turn on the PS3 and the LED will flash a lot (as if you've pressed the connect button), then press L3 and SELECT together for 3 seconds; it'll then connect. Then press the PS button.
As long as you keep the dongle plugged in, the controller will not disconnect and won't need pairing again.

Dualshock 3 just blinks with all four lights when i plug it into ps3 slim. reset button does nothing but delay blinking. no way of connecting so i dont know if it is charged or charging

Hello and welcome to Fixya. From what your describing it sounds as if your DualShock3 Controller lost it's bluetooth connection with the PS3. Make sure you plug the controller to the PS3 using the USB to miniUSB cable and hold down the PS button for three seconds to see if this resyncs it. If it does not turn your controller around and you will see a small hole. You will need a paperclip or other small long object and insert it into the hole to reset the controller. Next after pressing the reset button on the controller try the same steps that I provided above again. I can tell you that the four lights blinking slowly means the controller is actively charging. I hope you found this helpful and good luck.

Problem with ps3 controller

Try hard resetting it by doing this:

Flip the controller over, and press the reset button. It's to the right of the middle-top screw ps3_controller_reset.jpg. You'll need something like a paperclip, toothpick, or something similar to push the button. Once you've reset your controller, connect it to your PS3 with a handy USB cable, and press the PS button (just like you did when you first got the controller). Now, it is paired again, and you should be OK.

CONTROLLER PROBLEM

Try resetting your Controller. Using a paper clip, there is a small reset button on the underside of the SIXAXIS. Press it.

While your PS3 is still on, press the PS button on the controller.
