Question about HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer

Hi, my printer is a HP Color Laser Jet 2605dn. I've had it for several years and it's proved to work fantastic in all areas. However, in the last few months, I've had color issues. The printer prints out the color yellow instead of red and likewise with all the other colors. The quality is not the same anymore. Could this possibly be due to the ink cartridges? Or is there a deeper problem?

This printer does not use ink cartridges. It is a laser printer and uses toner cartridges. Yes, one or all three toner color cartridges maybe running out of toner.

    My bad. I used the term ink instead of toner. None are running out as they are brand new and I checked the levels too. I've cleaned all four cartridges. Is there any other solution?

    Remove toner build?up
    During the printing process, toner can accumulate inside the printer. Over time, this buildup can cause print-quality problems. Each time you replace the black print cartridge, remove toner build?up.
    Open the front door.
    Locate the blue cleaning tool that is situated to the left above the black print cartridge.

    Move the cleaning tool back and forth across the cartridge five times.

    Ensure that the cleaning tool is returned to the left when the cleaning is finished.
    Close the front door.
    Run a cleaning page.
    NOTE: You will get toner on your hands when you perform this cleaning. To remove toner, wash your hands with cool water.
    Clean the paper path using HP ToolboxFX
    NOTE: Use the following procedure to clean the paper path using the HP ToolboxFX. To clean the engine when the computer is running an operating system that does not support HP ToolboxFX, see the late-breaking Readme on the root of the CD-ROM, or visithttp://www.hp.com/support/clj2605 .
    Make sure that the printer is turned on and in the Ready state.
    Open the HP ToolboxFX.
    On the Troubleshooting tab, click Maintenance , Cleaning Page and then Print . A page with a pattern prints from the printer.
    At the printer, remove any print media in Tray 2 or optional Tray 3.
    Remove the page that printed and load it face-down into Tray 2 or optional Tray 3.

    At the computer, press Clean .
    Clean the paper path
    The printer features a special cleaning mode to clean the paper path.
    NOTE: If you have access to HP ToolboxFX, HP recommends cleaning the paper path by using HP ToolboxFX.
    To clean the paper path
    Use the (Left arrow ) or the (Right arrow ) button to select Service , and then press (Select ).
    Use the (Left arrow ) or the (Right arrow ) button to select Cleaning Mode , and then press (Select ).
    A page feeds through the printer slowly. Discard the page when the process is completed.
    Load plain letter or A4 paper when you are prompted.
    Press (Select ) again to confirm and begin the cleaning process.

According to your problem, The instruction is correct.First remove all pending print job from print queue by double click on printer in printers and faxes wizard. Then reboot the printer and system both. After turn on give a print job. If it doesn't help you then check the page setup in printer properties.

Faded prints are possible due to following reasons.

1. Fogged red mirrors inside the Laser box
2. Alignment of the Laser Box
3. Calibration Problem
4. Cleaning Problem

I will guide you with simple steps first, if this dosen't work working with laser box is little tough & time consuming, hence will describe later.

To Calibrate the colors, Press the 'Green Button' in the front panel, use the arrow keys to navigate through menu.

Select 'System Setting' by pressing the green button again, navigate using the arrow keys and select the 'Calibrate Color', select green button to select and confirm to 'Calibrate Now'. This will take few minutes.

In addition to that, to clean the paper path, select the green button and use the arrow keys and navigate thru' menu and select 'Service'. select using the green button and navigate through menu and select cleaning option. This will take few minutes.

Try printing some documents and check whether you have fixed. If you have not got the original print quality, Let know to guide you more technically.

Installed all new color cartridges but the red is dull to yellowish in color.


This is a common problem on these printers.

Cause is dirty lenses and or mirrors in the laser unit.

This happens over time (as the laser unit is not sealed), and particularly if you've had a leaky toner cartridge. Unfortunatly there are a lot of poorly remaufactured, leaky cartridges around for these printers.

Solution is remove laser unit, open it, clean lenses and mirrors (very carefully to avoid disturbing alignments, and scratching).

The laser unit is deep in the printer, so it's quite a lot of work, but very rewarding when you've fixed it.

Alternatives - buy a replacement laser unit and swap and clean old one at leisure, or get an exchange refurb printer - if you think your mechanical skills aren't up to it.

Color laser printers. Costs for toner vs. initial costs for ptr


Have you thought about having your printer cartridges refilled? There are huge savings to be made in doing so and the quality can be just as good as the original cartridges (depending upon the refiller). Another option would be for you to purchase an older color laser printer such as the HP Color Laserjet 4500 or 4550. I use one myself and couldnt be happier with it. And as its an older printer, you can get the cartridges relatively cheap.

HP has a list of troubleshooting steps you can go through for the HP 2605dn when you experience print quality issues.

Two specific things I would try from that list are:
  1. Clean the electrostatic transfer belt.
  2. Clean the printer paper path.
