Question about Elna Sewing Machines
The humming noise comes from the motor - it gets powered but it doesn't start spinning.
There are 2 possibilities why this is happening:
1. the motor itself is defective - the start coil or the control capacitor powering it are defective. To test that you must remove the motor from the unit, attach it to a bench and power it directly from the mains. If the motor doesn't spins on its own but will do it if you spin it manually right before connecting it to the mains then the capacitor or the starting coil have failed. The failed capacitor is easy to spot, you will need an ohm and l-meter for the coil.
2. the mechanism is blocked. The only way to check that is to literally dismantle the machine to find out .
If you don't have the experience to do these tests safely then it's time to take the machine to a repair shop.
