How do i nrepair the broken hot shoe of my canon 580EX.? AND WHERE CAN I GET THE PARTS?

I have not dealt with canon spares department, but from dealing with Olympus and other camera vendors, you must find the tel number of their spares department and order the broken part. Usually they don't know the part number, but you can often get them to send a picture or fax an exploded view, so you can match the parts you need.

The foot of my canon 550 which maybe similar, is attached with 4 screws and from memory you have to pop off the window in front too?

You might need a soldering iron too if wires are broken.
Taking apart these flashes there is some safety risk as the capacitors can be hazardous if still charged. If you don't know how to safely discharge the flash capacitor (the very large cylindrical part looking like a can), wait at least a few days after last powering unit and wear rubber gloves.

Camera vendors spares departments have got a lot less friendly to consumers in recent years, as they prefer to deal with repairmen. Sometimes this means you have to have an account or there is minimum cash amount. Be persistant and you can often get through to somebody helpful. try , 1 (866) 481-2569 to start, to try to find the real number you need

Ebay often also has spares, sometimes at outlandish prices.
Good luck.

580ex won't communicate with Canon 7D (Because I dropped it)

Not sure about the repair costs but why not invest in a Phottix Odin wireless system? I use them in my work and they perform flawlessly. Small and lightweight plus they are wireless which means that the camera can communicate through windows and walls etc.
Hope this helps

I just purchased a Rebel T2i and a 580EX II Speedlight. After approximately 50 flash photos, the speedlight shifts slightly to the rear and it appears the contact between the speedlight and camera...

It would appear to me that the flash was not locked in position and has move back on its mount which would cause the flash to go into complete manual mode or loose complete communications between camera and flash.
I would suggest shutting the camera and flash off remove the flash first unlock the little locking leaver on the bottom. The 580EX and the 580EX II differ in that the 580EX II has a leaver rather then the huge locking screw. Once apart reinsert the flash unit back into the camera hot shoe making sure that the forward edge of the flash mount is seated as deep into the Hot Shoe as possible and lock it into position. It should click into lock position. Biggest thing I have with my "crew" is when there is a flash installed on the camera they pick the camera/flash unit up by the flash that's a real bad thing cause the flash mount is light plastic and it'll ether break, twist or even unlock the flash enough that the camera falls off of the flash. Pick the assembly up with both hands lens and body. I'm not saying you are doing this but when my crew/working associate's do this I'm not happy.
Although that new switch idea is great it also can be unlocked without noticing.

Switch from film to digital cameras.

I also own a Vivitar 285 that i used with my Canon F1 manual 35mm camera. Most older cameras before the advent of digital, had a hot shoe on top of the camera, or like in my case, the hot shoe went over the rewind knob. I also had to plug in a power cord from the 285 flash foot and the cameras PC connection in order for the flash to work on some other cameras. The Canon Rebel XTi has a TTL (through the lens) hot shoe usable with Canon's own EX flash units. You can buy a "hot shoe to PC connector" if the TTL camera hot shoe doesn't work, but be extremely careful, the only problem that exists with the older manual flash units was the trigger voltage is as high as 200+volts which would fry digital camera hot shoes. I tried my unit with a Wein flash trigger device on the PC cord of the flash and my Canon D60 with it's own flash. All shots were overexposed and washed out highlights.  Here's a copy of the hot-shoe review:h The EOS 400D's hot-shoe can be used with Canon and third party flashes (although sync only on most third party units). The hot-shoe is E-TTL II compatible. Compatible flashes include Speedlite 220EX, 380EX, 420EX, 430EX, 550EX, 580EX, Macro-Ring Lite, MR-14EX, Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX and Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2.  The Canon Rebel XTi doesn't have a PC socket to plug in a manual flash trigger cord which common sense tells me there is no provision to step up the voltage to trigger manual flashes - so my answer is this combination is not a good idea on a Canon Rebel XTi. Hope this helps.
