Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

It sounds as though a belt is rubbing or slightly off-track. The sound is extremely loud. We've removed the plate around the brush bar, made sure the brushes are free of dog hair, and found that the belt appears to be on track. What should we try now? We haven't tried to use it to check for suction for fear of doing real damage! Thank you. Marcia VanDyne

I'm really ignorant here -- which part of the machine is the head, and how do I access it? The only belt I've seen is the one by the brush/roller bar, and it appears to be OK....

    Thanks.

Is the sound coming from the head unit where the belt is attached? When you power up the vac, can you watch the belt to see if it is frayed or running off track. I have the same Dyson and had this same issue, cleaning the head cured it, but your issue may be different.

It is on the end of the hose assembly. The unit that touches the floor and does the actual vacuuming.

Beater bar making a loud noise

Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. Once removed, we pulled the black plastic end nearest the belt off of the center rod. We discovered hair wrapped around each end of the center rod. After the hair was removed and the clean/brush bar was re-installed, the vacuum ran flawlessly. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us.

The beater motor will not turn. Is there a fuse? I've tried the reset, but this still doen't work. My wife smelled a burning smell and quit using.

Sounds like you need a new belt.Turn it upside down and locate the screws on the bottom.Remove those screws, and then the plate they hold on(if there are no screws then the plate will be held by clips just pull it off, carefully. The brush now may be lifted out,but before you do.The belt fits around the brush.Find which side,if the belt is broken and still in the vacuum,it should still be on the side it came from.If the belt is not still in the vacuum, there is a groove in the brush about one inch wide. That is where the belt fits. The other end of the belt fits on a small wheel about 4-5 inches back from the brush. There may be a small plate over the belt and wheel if so just remove it and you will see what I am talking about.

My dyson C07 ANIMAL is making a loud clatter noise when I push the head down. I have removed the sole plate and the brush bar is cracked so I removed it, but I understand the clutch maybe a problem also...

The noise is likely the clutch if you have a cracked brush bar. If so replace the brush bar, also replace the belts in the clutch or the clutch if the belts are stretched out.

The belt on my Dyson is making a terrible loud grinding sound after I removed the brush roller.

The sound is the clutch mechanism. That is a safety feature. It sounds like you have trapped the belt when you reinstalled it. If not, the brush roller bearings may be seized?
Take it apart again, spin the brush roller in your hand. Make sure it is free. When you reassemble it, before you refit the sole plate, turn the brush a few times with your fingers to make sure the belt finds its home on the roller. Only then refit the sole plate. Turn it again when fitted before you run it to make sure the brush is turning freely.
Then, make sure the clutch is engaged, see this article for more on clutches: DC14 clutch and brush roller

The brush bar will not spin. The belts melt when I turn it on and the belt drive is hot to touch with smoke coming out.

The belt is rubbing the foot plate.Check to see if the foot plate is damaged.Allso check the bearings in the brush bar are free and spin without the belt on.If you cant spin the brush bar by hand with the belt not attached then your bearings are seized.Get a new brush bar

Brush won't turn.

Hi, W/D here.

You'll need to remove the base plate around the beater bar, and remove any hair that is around the ends of the beater bar. It tends to collect there, along with bits of string, ribbon, and such. When you're removing the hair, be aware of how the beater bar fits in the sockets that hold it in the vacuum frame; you have to replace them in the right way or the beater bar will rub.

Best regards, --W/D--

the loud ratching is a warning to tell you that there is something stopping the roller bar from rotating this is a very common thing lay the machine on the floor front side down take off the bottom plate and just check the belt is in the centre of the belt guide on the brush bar normally if you turn the roller slowly without the bottom plate fitted it will straighten out on its own

Loud Noise

This sounds like something is caught in the brush roller. It is not uncommon for something like a pin, or nail or something of that nature to get caught in the roller chamber and when the roller spins, it will rub on the roller producing that sound. Sort of like putting a playing card in the spokes of your bike when you were a kid. Take the bottom plate off and remove the roller. Inspect the area around the roller for any foreign objects. While your there, check the belt for wear and tension and also check the roller bearings for any material that would interfere with it's smooth rotation. You should also check the hose intake for blockage.
