When playing back photos, the photos and videos are stored in the order taken so when previewing using the forward and back controls (right and left on the joypad) when you come across a video press the play/ pause control (down on the joypad) to play the video.
An extra tip is to press the play/ pause control to pause the video, then follow the on-screen instructions (I don't remember which button you press) to take a screen capture of the frame you are viewing and it will save it as a separate photo!
if you are getting the preview in the camera then there is no problme with the strip ... if you are getting the preview error means then the camera strip is surely gone ... you must take the cell to the service technician and get replaced with the new strip ... as this the damageable service it is better to take to technician ... "minor mistakes makes you pay more" .. so just visit the technician ...

To get your footage into the computer from DV tape you need a four pin firewire (IEEE1493 or iLink) cable from the camera to a six pin cable into the computer. USB will not do a proper job, it's for downloding photos or as you already mentioned, Web caming.
