Question about HP LaserJet 4000 Printer

2 Answers

HP 4000 Every so often I get the message when trying to print something (TRAY 1 LOAD PLAIN LETTER). Usually I can open & close tray 2 once or twice and it will be OK. I assume that there is a senser for paper in tray that is acting up. Can someone tell me where this is located at and if it can be cleaned, adjusted, or does it need to be replaced?

Everything in tray is as it should be.

This is a intermittent problem. Every so often the printer thinks tray 2 is empty even though it is full.

    Moe;
Size sensing switch is working OK. Blue slider OK.
Could you explain how the plastic arm that senses paper level works as this really seems to be where the problem is.

If you remove your paper cassette and look inside the area where the cassette normally sits you will see on the right hand side there are three metal "fingers".These are the sensors you are looking for, when the cassette is inserted it touches this metal sensors, for the machine the know what size is which.
A good inspection of those three would be could but be extra careful for they are quite sensitive, and aligned in a precise way. So if you would want to see and perhaps, give a try to adjust or clean, turn the printer on to its right side and remove the steel base cover, you will see a black(sometimes plastic) cover.Underneath that cover is a PCB board, which controls the "detection".
That board could also be part of your problem. could be damaged or worn out due to age.
BUT, please be sure to unplug the printer first and set it for awhile before opening the printer, might get you shocked, and AGAIN be careful on the three prongs or "fingers" sensor mechanism, a slight wipe,a little press in or out depending on the angle you see it appropriate to "touch" or be it activated by the feed tray or cassette.
Hope this helps. Thank you for using Fixya.com

Try the following and let me know if you need further assistance on this issue.
Follow these steps to check that the paper guides in the trays are correctly configured.

  1. Remove the tray in question from the printer, take out all of the paper, and verify that the rear paper guide and the side paper guides are aligned with the "Letter " guide slot and not the "A4" guide slot.
  2. On some paper trays, there is a dial on the right of the tray, along the outside area, where the paper is loaded toward the front. Follow these steps if the tray has the dial:
    1. Pull the tray out of the printer.
    2. Look at the blue paper-size-adjustment-dial and verify that the correct paper size is selected.
  3. Other trays have an adjustment in the left, upper area in front of where the paper is loaded. As soon as the tray is being removed, look down on top of it toward the front left side. For trays with this adjustment, follow these steps:
    1. Pull the tray out of the printer.
    2. Rotate the inset blue dial in the tray so that the printer will read the correct size of paper. The toggle switch accesses more sizes.

If you find this helpful please leave rating and or feedback, thanks!

How do I change the default on my HP P30005dn to Tray 2?

Normal default on HP is tray 2, however if you do not have that tray set for plain paper letter size the printer will default to whichever tray has letter plain paper installed. You should also check your print driver default settings to ensure that tray 2 is set as default tray.

Load specialty paper Follow these steps to load specialty paper such as card stock, envelopes, photo paper, or labels.
Before you proceed, verify that your printer supports the specialty paper on which you are attempting to print by viewing the product specifications . If the size, type, or weight of the paper is not available, the printer does not support printing it. Also note the tray loading capacity for the type of paper on which you are attempting to print.

I use a CM2320nf MFP connected to Windows XP. The unit seems to be defaulted to print 2 pages - and for double sided copies, it stops after 2 pages, then the Cleaning window pops up, then I get an error...

Problem 1 :
As far as the machine printing 2 pages per job. To fix this it's usually the default number of copies the printer is set to. To change/ confirm the setting is set to one:
Press the menu button
Arrow down to -> Printing, Press the green check to enter the menu
Arrow down to -> Copies Press the green check to enter the menu
Change or confirm the value = 1, (Based on your question this might be set to 2) Press the green save the value.
* If your number of copies is set to 1 and the machine is still printing 2 copies, then the problem relays in your print driver.

Problem 2: General Misprint Error message something like 41.3
2 things to check:

1st - Press the menu button
Arrow down to Paper Handling, Press the green check to enter the menu
Now you will see options like Tray 1 size - Tray 1 type. Here their will be a option for each tray installed on your machine. You will go into each tray option and confirm the paper size and type.
Example
Tray 1 Size = Envelope #10 (This is the manual feed tray)
Tray 1 Type = Envelope
Tray 2 Size = Letter
Tray 2 Type = Plain

To perform arrow down to tray X size press the green check to access the menu, arrow up or down to select your paper size. Once the paper size is selected press the green check to save it. repeat for each tray.

2nd -
Pull out your tray and remove the paper, towards back of the tray you will see a guide (Tab) in the middle of the tray which allows you to expand the tray to accept various paper sizes, Please confirm the guide is set to the correct type. If your using letter, make sure the guide is set to letter (LTR) you can see these codes by looking at the base of the guide, their is a little arrow pointer.

Hope this helps

WHEN PRINTING - THE PRINTER SAYS TRAY 1 LOAD PLAIN PAPER, USE PLAIN EXEC INSTEAD? THE PRINTER IS LOADED WITH 8 1/2 X 11 LETTER SIZE PAPER.

You have the settinigs on the printer wrong. There are two things you need to do:
1. Open the tray and check that the paper guides are set to 8.5 x 11 (letter). There are both length and width guides in the paper tray, and EXEC size is quite a bit off from letter-it is more than 0.5 inch narrower than letter. It is also shorter than letter.
2. On the printer, use the settings button to navigate to the paper size. (The exact wording may vary; it's been a while since I worked on a 4050. It may be under print settings.) Once you find the paper size menu, configure tray 2-yes, I'm sure-to use letter size, any type. By the way, on HP lasers, tray 1 is the fold down tray on the front, tray 2 is the tray that will hold 500 sheets of paper and is the "drawer" that you load. Don't ask me why they use that numbering system.

Tray 1- load plain letter

Linda,

On printer check media/paper type tray 2 or 3 is plain and tray 2/3 is set for letter paper size too, via printer control panel. Also check under paper handling other options for tray 1, also on tray 2 and 3, I think there is a blue little round switch on left should be set as letter not custom.

Some paper types cannot be feed from anywhere else but tray1/bypass ie labels/laminate/card stock.

Check print driver on pc has tray 3 option installed and is not set as default to print to manual bypass/tray 1

light flashing cause printer wants paper type/size that it "thinks" it hasn't got in tray 2/3

If that dont cover it...post back
