Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop with Windows XP Home Edition. Was upgrading my McAfee virus protection with new 2010 version with CD, not website. During process computer froze up. Waited 15 minutes. No change in freeze. Then I powered it off manually after asking for the Task Manager to see what problem was. Now the laptop will not power on. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. What can I do? Or did I "kill" it when asked to shut it down? Thank you.

The upgrade process can be a coincidence with what happened here , but since the laptop was shut down manually that may have cause some damage on it .

What you can do here is to drain the power first from it by taking the battery out from it for about 10 , ten put it back in and power the laptop on and check if it will be fine now and also listen when you power it On if there;s any beep sound that you will hear that will help us check what is the problem now.

Can you add your McAfee to the notebook or is it for only one PC? Although isolated, it still must send/receive radio waves to collect the data, and WiFi are not known for their security compared to Ethernet. If I were in your position, it would be worthwhile for the extra protection. It may never happen to be hacked by someone wandering by, but if you rely on that bandwidth, you certainly don't want it stolen.

I need to reinstall windows xp home edition i have the product code but no disk

I have used full install/ disk from other brands of computers (or other dell model numbers)to reinstall operation system (must be winxphome, dont worry about service pack, you can update). If you use any dell reinstallation cd, most likely you will not have to enter your key. If you use any other computer brand, or borrow someones xphome full install disk (not upgrade), then you will need to enter your key. Only problem of using for example emachine full install disk is that is will have emachine themes. Also you will likely need to down load other drivers. You are not lemited to to using reinstall cd for your model number. Good luck

Possess dell inspiron 6000 centino wireless, need drivers and xp

You can contact Dell Technical Support and see if they will send you a new XP CD. All the drivers can be downloaded at Support.dell.com for that system. If you can't get Dell to replace the CD, try Ebay. Here is an Example:

I have a dell inspiron 1525 model..............yesterday i connect it to a net to find the keygen of some software so i turn off my antivirus so viruses were come and c drive gets badly harmed ,,,,,,,,now...

First thing you needs to install new windows via boot able CD.
Please do not start installing windows while running ur old windows. i mean please not upgrade ur windows to newer once.

Steps for installing fresh windows :
1. Make bootable win xp disk.
2. Insert Disk into drive and boot ur laptop with CD drive (If unable to boot then change BIOS settings)
3.Setup will automatically detect ur previous version of Windows.Just ignore it and start fresh installation and alll Done.

OS - windows home edition to windows XP - upgrade?

Home Edition is already a version of XP. XP was released in Home and Professional versions. You can find out for sure what version of software you have by right-clicking on the desktop icon for "My Computer" (or on the "My Computer" entry on the Start Menu if the icon is not on your desktop), then clicking on "Properties" from the popup menu.

If you want to upgrade from XP Home to XP Professional, you can do that with the appropriate upgrade CD. But unless you are networking in an office setting, there really are no features in Pro that you don't have in Home.

If you still have questions, please post a follow up comment and I will try to help further.

My **** laptop

Hi,

First you need to determine what operating system was installed and what version. Let's say Windows XP Home Edition, you need to borrow that CD installer or even an OEM version. Soon as it is available, change your BIOS/CMOS setting to configure the laptop to boot off from the CD Drive. Pop in the borrowed CD installer and boot the laptop. The OS will install. If it were an original CD appropriate to your OS then all the drivers will be installed. If the CD is an OEM version, then you need to download from the Dell website the necessary drivers.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Problem with antivirus or firewall

Hi Tanya!Looks like you have some registry entries left..you can delete them as follows..
Click start->run->type regedit
When the registry editor opens click on edit ->find->type mcafee
When you find something just press del..Keep pressing F3 until you get a message finished searching thru the registry..
The try installing norton..If it still doen't work then you might have been infected with some kind of virus..If this is the case restart the computer in safemode and try to install.Post back the status so that we can help you resolve this issue..
