Question about HP LaserJet 2420 Printer

1 Answer

I am getting smudges on the sides of the pages as they print, as well as some ghosting of some of the print detail...I tried dusting whatever visible surfaces I can to try to get any extra toner dust out.. what am I missing?? I just put a new cartridge in - it was going it before, and I thought it was 'cuz the toner was low and maybe the cartridge was too old. Any info is much appreciated.

The corona wire/roller is the main charging unit for the static drum and the paper, if that is dirtied by toner u will get smudges all over your pages even with a new catridge. if ur familiar with the corona unit try cleaning it but be careful not to damage it. other wise take your printer to the technician.

Take the toner cartridge out of the printer. Shake it side to side. Reinstall it and print something.
See if that fixes the output.
Could also be the transfer roller.

When I print there are smudges on the sides and then begins mirroring words onto the paper

Ghosting and problems on the edges are often caused by a bad fuser. Remove the fuser from the printer and have a look at it. The upper roller in the fuser is the heat roller and it has a teflon cover on it. If that roller looks dirty or has toner accumulated on it or the teflon cover is shorter than the other roller or has visible damage then you will need to replace the fuser. The good news is that supplies for this printer are very reasonable in price.

Hi Colin.

I just have had the same problem with my Aculaser C4200.
I may have found a way to solve you problem.
Just print 10 blank (without anything), and after that i took all toner's, the fuser etc. and put it back again. Printed 10 more blank pages, and printed over 200 pages with lot of tekst and colour (think that 50 pages could do it).
After 2 days everything is still ok for me.

Smudging when printing photos, but not colour textprinting

(1) Most photopaper is made to be printed on one side only. Check to see that you are printing on the correct side. (2) You mention new cartridges. Are they the same brand as cartridges you've used before? If they're a different brand, you may want to try whatever worked before.

Smudges and 'ghost image" down the page from true image, little used printer, not even a whole cartridge used

Laser Printers that printouts can be smudged usually means the Transfuser (the part that settles the toner onto paper) is not fully functioning or damaged. Simply replace it and it should be back to normal. However, these Transfusers are quite expensive. So you may be better off to get a quote for a new one if out of warranty.

The document prints but leaves ghost images on the page also

A laserjet is different than a inkjet.
Ghosting is either the toner or the fuser:

This is the test to determine toner or fuser issue.
Print a test page
When you hear the paper feed into the machine open the top to stop the machine
Remove the toner cart.
You should be able to see the page with printing on it. (This is before the page hits the fuser)
If you can see the smudge or marks on the page the problem is most likely the cartridge but NOT the fuser.
If the page is clean the problem is most likely the fuser.
Hope this helps

Print smudges and ghosts down the page

Usually ghosting is caused by the fusing unit, which usually means that it needs replaced to be honest. You could try getting into the fuser and giving the rollers a wipe, they may have dry toner on them which could also cause the fault. but i'd say the fuser could need changed!!!
Hope that helps  (",)

Black smudges on printed page

Are you sure this is a Designjet 450 (large format printer) and not a Deskjet 450 (portable printer)? The following assumes you have wispy black streaking on the printed side of the paper. If the streaking is on the back side then post more details of the printer model and the issue.

In either case the most likely cause is a buildup of fibers on the underside of the printheads or carriage, causing wisps of black ink to be dragged on the paper when the carriage reverses direction. You can clean the printer as shown at the following (though the details will be somewhat different for the Designjet or Deskjet....).

Smudge marks on paper; otherwise normal

fuser is usually replaced as a assembly, it's the hot bit a back.

Can only be two things the drum or the fuser as our headstrong friend has correctly explained.

More than likely it is the drum they last about 4 toners i think.

Learn the art of getting a page to stop halfway threw printing, you want to stop the page after the drum has put a image on the paper but before paper has gone threw the fuser (hotbit).

Once you have mastered the position correctly by stopping the printing by opening the door and removing drum/toner cartridge, to reveal the paper that is printed but can be rubbed off, we will know if marks are coming from the drum (you will see them) or from the fuser, if print is fine
