Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a 42 inch GE Monogram side by side fridge with moisture and condensation (droplets) under the cabinet. Three (3) repair people have come by including a GE technician. It is twenty years old but the case, motor, condenser, ice maker all check out. I have been told it isn't a parts issue but that the insulation in the case walls is wet and by shutting down the unit and drying it out I may solve the problem. Noone can say why it happens, just that it does. A replacement is 7500 dollars. Has anyone heard of this fix and has it worked at all? Mark in Santa Monica

"in the old days"rockwool/fibreglass was used as insulation, but it wasnt thick enough to stop the heat/cold from transfering to the outer casing, hence internal/cavity CONDENSATION.you will NEVER dry it out other than taking it apart and infilling with expanding foam insulation.still cheaper than buying a new one(i have never done it but an aerosol can(or three)of insulating foam sprayed on the inside of the fibreglass COULD work............in theory anyway.

Ge monogram has water droplets in refrigerator side just along top right corner edge where top door gasket closes against refridgerator. Refridgerator seems to be holding temperature. Condenser is above...

The gasket may have worn some causing an air leak,.and you
are seeing water condensation from the leak. Try adjusting
the door hinge. Close the door on a piece of paper and see if
you can pull the paper out. Adjust the hinge until the paper is
tight. You may have to adjust both hinges to align it properly.

Fridge temperature has suddenly dropped to 15

Check the door gaskets, condenser fan, refrigerator fan and the freezer fan. That should narrow down the problem.

My Ge Monogram Refrigerator required maintenance cleaning on the condenser, typical with this type of built-in system. blew out the dust and cleaned it. the freezer is working fine but the refrigerator...

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

How do I remove the front panel to access the ice chute from the front

The panel approx 4x6" is removed by pulling or prying the bottom of the panel outward . Remove the 3 plugs and then remove the 4 screws in each corner of the "plate" . First I would suggest to unplug the door to cabinet receptical , so there is no power to the door .The rreceptical is either under the top freezer door cap or behind the bottom kickplate .

42'' monogram getting very hot between doors and in unit above

This is typical for frost-free refridgerators/freezers. In order to keep ice from buiding up on the interior walls of the freezer section, the manufacturer installs electric defrosting elements and extra "warming" elements in the outer edges of the cabinet, normally around the door openings to help mitigate any frost/ice build up and surface condensation that typically occurs on the exterior surfaces as the doors are opened and closed frequently.

These edge warmers stay very warm to keep ice and condensation from accumulating and will become VERY very warm (hot) when the fridge/freezer is in the once a day defrost cycle.

Unless you have an energy saver switch (GE trademark) inside the fridge section, which you can turn off, there is no way to disable these added elements. If you find that you're getting ice building up in the freezer, you'll need to turn off the energy saver switch to resolve that issue.

Energy Saver switch "ON" means these elements are off, while having the ES switch "OFF" means those heaters are running all the time and costing you more in energy consumption
