My Laptop won't recognize my HDD after trying to partition!!!

HELP!!! I wanted to partition my hard drive so that I could have a dedicated area for backup. After I partitioned it, Windows popped up a window that stated, "Windows could not load the installer for Volume. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance." I contacted I/O Magic and all they would tell me was how to partition a hard drive and not how to fix it. Disk Management would "partition" the hard drive, so to speak, but there would not be a file system or volume name. Several other messages would pop up requiring a restart or the same "Windows could not load the installer for Volume. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance," but nothing ever happens. Luckily, I moved all data over to my main hard drive before I tried to partition. Here are the screenshots of the entire process so you can see what I did.

I hope that will help you to help me fix my problem. Any other details you need I will be MORE THAN HAPPY to give them to you. I just want my hard drive back.

Did you format the HDD before putting into your laptop? If not, try using a Linux-flavor partitioning tool such as Partition Magic or DiskPart and format the HDD.

If you want to format it for PC, go to partition manager and the HDD should show there, if not use a partition manager program to select the HDD. Now you should format it to NTFS for windows or FAT32 if you want to use it for windows and mac.

Windows 7 does not recognized it

Your external hard drive likely has no partitions so Windows has no drive to mount. Follow these steps to create and format a partition for your external hard drive.

1. Press Win+R to open the Run command.
2. Type "Control" into the dialog box.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools.
4. Double-click Computer Management.
5. Select Disk Management under Storage.
6. Find the 250 GB External Hard drive in the right pane.
7. Right click on the drive and select "Create new partition".
8. After the partition is created you will need to format the partition.
9. Format the partition as NTFS unless you plan on booting off the hard drive, in which case format the partition as FAT32. You can also create multiple partitions if you want.
10. Enter My Computer and you will now see your external hdd.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.

HDD not recognised

HI Your Hard Drive is previously formatted and have done different partition provided by your previous machine where you took this hard drive from. Use "The Partition Magic" Software, it will help you to fix and repartition your hard drive in the new format. I have this problem before and now my hard drive can connect with any computer. The key in this issue is any hard drive goes with the original machine has been formatted and do its own partition from manufacturer so if you take it out later for use with other machine, you will need a software to completely rearrange the new partition in universal format so other computers can recognize it. This manufacturer purpose to protect your data from hacking, stealing once you take it out from the original machine. That is why when you connect it to other machine, this hard drive will not be recognized. I has this partition magic software and can make you a copy so you don't have to buy it. Just read the instruction and you can fix it for both 2.5" and 3.5" HD. Please email me at joe_dao2003@yahoo.com and provide me your mailing address, I can send the copy software to you. Regards, pingping
