Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

The blue lights on the front of the device are blinking. Not sure if in moving the device that it caused some sort of problem. I did move it a couple of times which seems to be when the problem started to occur. I tried pushing the horizontal switch on the back, but that did nothing. Anyone have any ideas????

It is a TR (???) in size. The serial number is: WCAV54824227. R/N=CBC

The numbers are fairly hard to read as they are so small. I think the numbers are correct though.

Did if fall over-Quite possibly. I did move it from home to work and a couple other locations. I did not see anything that said to lock the darn thing and did not even know it had a lock button if in fact that is what the thing is on the back. It stands upright and is blackwith vents on the top and back.

    Hope this helps.

I have a rapid blinking of the blue lights. I do not get anything past that. Nothing comes up on the computer like it used to when it was loading or loaded. Just seems to be stalled with the blue light flashing rapidly.

No sound. When I first power it up, it feels like the drive is turning, but no clicking. After it is on, the drive does not feel like it is turning.

Okay, sounds like we are at an impasse. I think I will just try to return it as it should still be under warranty. Thanks for your help.

did the drive fall over when you moved it around? I can't offer much assistance without knowing the model number of your Western digital Mybook.

Send me its brand and model and serial or anything else that you can find from it.

I'll respond as soon as possible.

The lock button behind the drive is for the Drive lock feature -
"Gain peace of mind knowing that your data is protected from unauthorized
access or theft with password protection and 256-bit hardware-based

Thanks I see you have a 1 TB MyBook Essential.

So you have a small led on the front that flashes 3 times per second or is it flashing every 2-3 seconds.

If its flashing fast it means that there is activity and the drive is doing somehting.

If it flashing slow it means that the drive is in standby.

Try turning the drive off and on, do you hear the ding sound from the computer? how about does the drive appear in my computer?

Lets check those things and get back to me when you have.

Put your ear on the drive or to the side of it and listen to the sounds its making, what do you hear, is it steady hummm, or clicking?

if the drive is clicking, you have probably dropped the drive or it has fallen over, they are very fragile and won't survive If it was powered on at the time

  • Ekse Nov 10, 2010

How old is the drive and is it in warranty? If you are outside of warranty, you could take the casing of the drive apart and connect the hard drive inside it directly inside your computer.

If the drive is not turning it sounds like the powersupply might not be giving out the required voltage / power to the unit to function.

Or then its got a bad hit and the drive doesn't spin anymore at all. But note at the start it does feel different than after a moment as the drive spins up it will shake or vibrate a little.

And also the lock button on its back, make sure that is turned off unless you have had it on for some time.

Also the drive came with some programs, do those detect the drive being attached to the computer?

allright, do let me know if you need further assistance or if any new questions arise later.

How to install

Plug in the reciever into the computer and make sure the mouse has fresh batteries. Once you are in Windows, press the link button on the receiver. The indicator light should start blinking. Then within two seconds press the link button on the bottom of the mouse, the indicator light should quit blinking. After re-linking the devices move the mouse to see if it moves the cursor. I have a Canon MP830. I am getting an error message 6A00 with a blinking alarm light. Cannot use copy or scan funcitons. Eric

Error 6A00 is a sevice error related to your device, not a user error. This a very good device and should not give you much trouble.

It could be down to use of none canon inks glogging the ourge unit up after time, it could be due to paper or objects in the purge, i would take the covers and inspect the purge and make sure that it moves back and foward. Make sure that the printer is clean on the inside and everything that should be able to
move, can move freely. It is usually a clogging of ink which causes this problem. Hope this can help you.

Best regards

Lacie 2 big does,nt boot

Hmmm, reseting worked on mine. Identical symptoms except light stayed blue, not red. Unable to power down.
Before trying to get the drive working I got the data off using the procedure in the second post of this thread:

You need a linux system running. Maybe a live cd will do. I installed on an old IDE drive I had.

I then rest the decive using this procedure from Lacie and my drive is working again. Worthless though, because I can't trust it.

The procedure below will reset the 2Big Network to factory settings:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Following the procedure below can ERASE ALL DATA on the drive. Prior to following these directions, verify important data is stored securely on a different storage device.
Switch the drive OFF. Once it has shut down, ensure the power switch remains in the OFF position.
If the drive is in the SAFE mode, move the RAID switch to the BIG mode.
PRESS AND HOLD the button on the front. MOVE the power switch to the ON position. The light on the front of the drive will start blinking.
Once the light stops blinking, RELEASE the front button.
When released, it will begin BLINKING AGAIN. When it stops, PRESS AND HOLD the front button. The light will begin to blink again.
When the light stops blinking, RELEASE the button. The drive is now resetting itself. Switch the RAID selector back to SAFE if desired.
To restore data if it was lost during the process, recreate the shares and users on the unit prior to the reset. Any firmware updates applied will need to be applied again.

The printer apear to be dead!

Buttons and lights on the printer Two buttons and three lights are located on the front of an HP Deskjet printer.
  • The lights tell when the printer is working or when it needs attention.
  • The buttons help control the printer.

All lights are off. The printer is off (asleep).

Press the POWER buttonc00123886.jpg to turn the printer on.

The printer should turn on automatically when a print job is sent to it. c00123898.jpg

The POWER (top) light is on. The printer is idle.

The printer is ready to print a document. c00123900.jpg

The POWER (top) light is blinking. The printer is busy printing.

Allow enough time to print. When a document has many fonts or graphics or uses complex color such as a color photo, it takes longer to begin printing. c00123902.jpg

The PRINT CARTRIDGE (bottom) light is blinking. Possible causes:

  • The front cover is open. Make sure the front cover is completely closed.
  • The print cartridge is missing. Make sure the print cartridge has been installed correctly.
  • The print cartridge is broken or incompatible. Lift the front cover, and wait for the print-cartridge cradle to slide out. Check the part numbers on the print cartridge:

Black: 51645A

Color: C1823D,

If the print cartridges are compatible and correctly installed, they may be defective. Try replacing the print cartridges.

If none of the above suggestions fix the problem, and, if the error message still occurs, it may be a hardware failure. Call the HP Customer Support Center.
