Question about Dell Dimension E521 (D10E16) PC Desktop

1 Answer

My Dell desktop computer will not boot and it is too old to spend money on repairs. However, I would like to be able to get the files off my hard drive. If I buy a kit and turn the internal hard drive into an external hard drive will I be able to access the files?

Nope. you cannot access your files. even if you use a external hard dive to access the files.

i suggest you install windows 7 in your computer but do not reformat the hard disk . in that way your files will still be saved in your harddrive.
Once you have access to your files i suggest you save them in a flash drive or external hard drive if you have one. then reformat your computer and install a windows xp.

here is a tutorial on how to install windows 7 without reformatting your harddrive.

Goodluck. If you have any success using my solution please give me updates.. Thanks

How do I make Dell 530s boot and load windows?

Are there any sets of audio 'beeps' that occur during startup? If you get anything other than a single beep during startup, it could indicate an error code for hardware failure detected during the POST phase of bootup.

If you have recovery or Windows installation CD's, try pressing F12, go to the bootup menu and try booting from the CD.

Look at the bootup menu and see if there is a hard drive as one of the options. If the hard drive is not there, or if you try to boot from the hard drive from that menu and you get error messages, that might indicate something wrong with the hard drive.

If you can boot from the CD, you may be able to use the Windows Recovery Manager to restore Windows on your hard drive, if the hard drive is working. There may also be a recovery partition on the drive that will allow you to recover Windows, but beware that files on the hard drive may be lost when you use the recovery partition.

If you have files on the hard drive you need to recover, you may be able to remove the hard drive, put it on an USB drive adapter, and use another PC to copy files off of the old drive, even if it cannot boot the old computer. After you have recovered your files, you can try the recovery partition or format the drive and use Windows install disks to restore Windows to the drive.

Just yesterday my desktop pc worked fine but, today when I turned it on, it would not boot up as usual. I cant even boot up in safe mode or choose a restore point, nor can I install a new OS or repair...

It sounds like you have a bad hard drive. Your best bet is to install a new hard drive and install the OS onto it, then attempt to recover any data from the old hard drive externally using an external enclosure. Note any noises from the old hard drive like clicking (it's usually very loud and consistently timed), if you do notice anything then you won't be able to recover any data without spending a lot ($600 + ) of money.

If you made a backup disc use that disc and run the repair files options when you boot up your computer. Sound like one of the files got corrupted on hard drive.

My Computer takes forever to boot up How can I speed up my PC

Typically this is caused by a hard drive that is filling up with software, or fonts or other excess programmes.

Without spending money try these steps:

1.) Delete any unused programmes or fonts or any other uncesssary files
2.) Go to My Computer / right click on hard drive icon/ properties and then click on disc cleanup
remove any temp or cookie or browsing files
3.) As above, and go to TOOLS and schedule a disc check of the drive
4.) Reboot and go back to the above, this time click on TOOLS / Defragment files

After that, and if there is no noticable improvement, the options of obtaining a larger hard drive to enable a more efficient swap file (where windows puts files as it is working on them), is advised, as is upgrading the RAM. Both will make the system run more smoothly.

Dell Latitude D630 Laptop, no Bootable device when trying to start laptop, but hard drive works find on other computer usb drive

It sounds like you have lost the boot manager file. The boot manager is a file set up by Windows to stop hackers from getting in to your system and if a problem occurs it is deleted by Windows.
When you try to boot and the desktop gets to POST, teh Dell page, quicklt hit F8
When, and it will take a few goes to get the timing right, you are succesfull a DOS menu will be shown on your screen
Select repair and follow the instructions.
Hope this helps.

Dell computer does not boot up - I have a Dell

First I would press (I think) F11 for the boot device. In the Dell boot menu, you will have the option of running diagnostics. Try that.
You can see the Dell splash screen on startup and you can see the options letting you choose what to do. So, you can be pretty sure your CPU. motherboard, and video are OK. The next suspect might be the hard drive or the files on the hard drive. But if you don't get a "no boot device" message, it sees the hard drive. I've also experienced a booting problem if the CD goes bad. So--first run the diagnostics. Then open the case and disconnect the cable from the CD and try booting.
I am assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you have pushed F8 key after computer startup to see if you can start the computer in safe mode.

My Dell Optiplex 745 "No Boot Device Available"

No boot device means that the computer cannot find a drive that has a operating system files and therefore cannot boot up.
This usually means that the hard drive in the computer is faulty.
You need to get a new hard drive and install Windows on the hard drive, together with the drivers for the computer's installed devices and programs to get a working computer.

Dell PC has major virus/malware infection or is just dying

You need to update your antivirus. Definitely your system has viruses that made your system to boot slow and preventing you from opening your folders. I recommend you to use updated full version antiviruses like avg 8 or avast. They automatically update. They surely remove viruses from your system and your computer be protected. If you cannot successfully download antiviruses from your PC, then use other computer if you want a hassle free from repairing or installing a fresh copy of OS or shall i say starting from scratch again.

Best regards
