Use the (-) key to the right of the decimal point key when entering a negative number. The - key to the right of the 6 key is for subtracting something from something else. In order to subtract from something, if you don't specify anything then the calculator uses the previous answer as designated by "Ans." The same thing happens with the + key for example, because it adds something to something else.

For the "-" did you use the subtract key "-" or the negative key "(-)" to the right of the decimal point?

If you used the subtract key then you need something between it and the "=" since the "0.5x" has to be subtracted from something.

Press the (-) key located just to the right of the decimal point key before entering the exponent. Don't use the - key to the right of the 6 and 9 keys, this is to subtract one number from another. The (-) key is for negating numbers.

All you need to know is how to enter a number in scientific notation. As to the operations you do them the usual way: For example, to multiply you enter a number (in any notation) press the multiplication key then enter the second number (in any notation) and press the = sign to get the result.

The problem is that the result may not be in scientific notation format. But for that you can configure the calculator to always show results in scientific format. Here is how to force that. Press [SHIFT][MODE] to enter (SetUp). In the screen that displays enter the number for the option SCI. You will then be prompted to specify the number of decimal digits. You will enter a number between 0 and 9. If you select 0 you will not have decimals in the result, and if you enter 9 you will have 9 decimals. What is the appropriate number of decimal place to keep in the FINAL result will depend on the number of significant digits in the measuremnets.

To enter a number in scientific notation (ex: 6.25x10^(-4))

You enter the so-called mantissa 6.25

You press the key at the bottom of keypad that is marked as [X10^x]

You enter the change sign (-) followed by the exponent 4

The HR-8TE/HR-8TM have a [DEC] key with F, 0, 2, and 5/4 over it, while many other calculators models have a switch labeled [F CUT 5/4].

The button or switch can control rounding off to a certain number of decimal places. F is floating point (no F indicator on screen), 0 rounds off to 0 places after decimal point, and 2 rounds off to 2 places after decimal point.

The 5/4 applies to either the 0 or 2 modes, and describes the type of rounding off that is performed. The calculator will round down if the digit after the one you are rounding to is 4 or lower, and round up if the digit is 5 or higher.

This switch is used to determine how many decimal places your answer is displayed in.

ADD (2) is often used for monetary calculations, so that it is not necessary to enter the decimal point. It is automatically placed two decimal places from the end for cents. For example, entering 123 will display as 1.23.

Your Texas Instruments calculator has a built-in printer for producing a permanent record printout of

your calculations with negative numbers printed in red. A big, easy-to-read display also enables you to

check entries or perform quick calculations without printing.

GETTING STARTED

1. Connect the calculator to a proper power outlet (110-120V or 220-240V

where available).

2. The calculator is turned on by setting the POWER switch to the PRT

position.

Inserting the paper (see illustrations 1, 2, 3, and 4 on page ii).

1. Turn on the calculator.

2. Open the printer compartment cover by pressing down on its front edge and sliding it back in the

direction of the arrow.

3. Fit the roll of paper on the holder so that it unrolls from the bottom, with the loose end toward the

calculator.

4. Cut the end of the paper squarely and insert it firmly into the printer slot on the back of the

calculator.

5. Press & until the paper is in the printing position.

Replacing the ink roller (see illustrations 5 and 6 on page ii)

1. Turn the calculator off and tear off the excess paper.

2. Remove the printer cover by pressing down on both sides of the front edge and sliding back in the

direction of the arrow.

3. Remove the old ink roller by lifting it with the removal tab.

4. Insert the new ink roller into the compartment and press down gently until it snaps into place. Close

the printer compartment.

Note: The old ink rollers should not be refilled. Replacement rollers can be obtained from your local

retailer. The warranty does not cover ink roller replacement.

KEY DESCRIPTIONS

Basic keys

I Clear Entry: Clears an entry, enabling you to enter another number in its place. Note

( Right Shift: Deletes the right-most digit entered from an entry before an operation key is

pressed. Shifts the remaining digits one place to the right.

L Decimal Point: Enters a decimal point.

Does not affect calculations. This entry is printed on the left side of the printout, the date

? Multiply: Multiplies the number in the display by the next value entered.

# Gross Profit Margin: Calculates the selling price of an item when its cost and gross

PRINT KEY:
To save paper you can only print what is displayed, even
in non-print mode.
Pressing after the entry of a number will print the entry
with the symbol “#” even in non-print mode.
Pressing will insert a separator into a number entry
such as a code, date, etc. Separators are displayed as a
period and dashes but printed as periods.
MEMORY + KEY / PRINT ON / OFF KEY:
Pressing selects print mode or non-print mode.
Cause the calculator to operate in a display / print or
display only mode, depending upon the calculator’s
present state.
“P” on the display: Print mode.
“NP” on the display: Non-print mode.
MEMORY – KEY / DECIMAL SELECTION KEY:
Pressing sets the number of decimal places in

“F” on the display:
