Question about Whirlpool GC5SHEXN Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool GC5SHEXNS00 side-by-side refrigerator that has stopped cooling. For quite some time the center column was hot to the touch, but it maintained the ability to cool. Now it no longer cools and it doesn't sound like the compressor is running. I do hear a fan noise inside the unit and a slight blowing of air, but not cold air.

If the center wall was hot then your defrost heater was stuck on, now with no cooling it could be you burnt out the compressor or the main board could be fried. Not good either way, it might be time for a new one. Sorry

Definitely not what I was hoping to hear, but it makes sense. Can you give me an idea of the estimated cost of either repairs? Depending on the potential cost, I may choose to buy a new unit. Seems a shame for a refrigerator that is only 6 years old.

Sorry for the delay, You will be looking at 250-400 if its the board and over 500-600 for a comp change with labor. Just so you know I would suggest a GE or Bosch if you do replace, thay are much better units.

What about Samsungs? I have read very positive reviews on them. Also considering switching to a french door/bottom freezer style. Any guidance on if those are worth it and potential brands?

  • John Riley Nov 09, 2010

The Samsungs are good units, As far as the frencj doors go I do like them, they cost a little more but are very nice. One thing to look at is if you are getting one with ice and water in the door look at the size of the ice bucket, lots of the french door units have a very small bucket so you run out of ice all the time. Good luck

Sorry, one more question. After having the refrigerator off over night, I just plugged it in and the back of the fridge made a buzzing noise for about two minutes and now is silent. The internal fan is blowing lightly, but nothing else is happening. Does that narrow down the likely culprit: main board or compressor?

  • John Riley Nov 09, 2010

The Buzz could mean a few different things but I would let it run for a few hours just to see if it comes back cooling, if so than it would be the board. Keep your eye on that center wall if it starts to get hot again be ready for it to quit cooling for good.

Okay, I found three circuit board parts online for this model:

    1) Relay Board (#1548001) description: Relay control board
    2) Control Module (#1381553) description: Inverter box, Compressor control
    3) Circuit Board or Timer (#1058825) description: Main control board asm

Which of these would be the culprit? Could I do the work myself as I am very capable handyman?

  • John Riley Nov 09, 2010

    3) Circuit Board or Timer (#1058825) description: Main control board asm
If your handy you should be able to switch that out yourself,
If your unit has started to cool then I would try it

  • sbarrett67 Nov 09, 2010

Thanks. The unit cooled about 3 degrees in the first 30 minutes, but hasn't dropped any further in the past hour. I heard the buzzing come on once more about 30 mins ago and went away after a minute. The center column has not heated up at all.

    Thoughts?

  • sbarrett67 Nov 09, 2010

Actually no additional cooling for the past two hours.

  • John Riley Nov 09, 2010

Give the unit 10-12 hours with the doors shut, if not to temp by then I would not waiste the money on the board. On average they take a 8 hours to get cold but with yours wait the 10-12 to see if she comes back for you.

sounds like your compressor was failing with a bad contact and has now stopped working, will cost as much to repair as replace. At least newer fridge save costs in electricity, yeah sucks to have to buy another, sorry not much else you can do

Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. side by side Refrigerator with in door ice

The process of Refrigeration is for one section to be hot while cooling another section. I.e freezing in one section result in the heat build up and dissipattion else where. Any compressor working properly is going to be quite warm to the point of being hot to the touch when working NORMALLY. There is nothing that you need to do for the continued safe operation of your compressor. If your freezer has ice build up again in the near future your uint is not defrosting properly. If it functions normally after 2 or 3 days of use then you more than likely had a one time buildup of ice usually caused by someone leaving the door partially open

Center Divider VERY hot...

The center divider gets very hot , when the fan motor that cools the compressor stops or the coils at the front bottom , gets clogged with dust , lint , pet hair , etc . Check the coils to make sure they are clean . Next , pull the refrig out from the wall , and remove the bottom panel . Check that the fan is working and that nothing is blocking the fan blade , cooling the compressor and coils .

Whirlpool Gold side by side cabinet extremely hot to the touch.

the refrigerator has mullions simaler to the veins underneath your skin to aid in cooling .the first thing to check is the fan by the compressor is it running while the compressor is if so the next thing to inspect is the condensor coils usaly underneath the fridge or directly on the back of the fridge alot of times these get clogged with lint and or animal hairsimply unplug the fridge and gently brush off the lint and vacume.your feed back on the resolve for this issue would be gratly app.

Whirlpool side by side GS6SHEXNQ00

Hi. You either have a dust blocked condenser coil or your condenser fan motor has stopped. It is located next to the compressor. If the motor has failed, put a fan in the back of your refrigerator and let it blow into the back of the refrigerator until you get a fan motor. Make sure you leave the compartment cover off the back of your refrigerator. Your compressor is super hot now and the start device relay is getting hot and may fail if the situation isn't resolved soon. I would get a new start device relay for the compressor also to prevent future failure. The reason for the hot areas is because the freon is not being cooled and there is freon tubing located inside the cabinet where you are touching. Please check my items on Ebay as username themackshack. Good Luck, Mack

You should be able to see the fan spinning if you look under the frige with a flashlight to the back or feel air flow (tissue paper helps) coming from underneath it. As for the center column, if you mean the divider area between sides, that being real hot means the compressor refrigerant is overheated. It should be warm to touch not hot. Sounds like your condensor fan is out or packed full of dust bunnies and not spinning. The compressor will overheat and "trip" the thermal overload on and off so you do need that cooling fan. All the underside of the frige needs to be clean and clear of hair, pet fuzz, etc. in order to cool properly. The fan is likely out of warranty but they are cheap and easy to replace by a homeowner.
