Same problem. Vista recognizes with it is pluged/unpluged by the beep that accompanies USB devices being plugged in. However, there is no drive associated with it.

I have the same issue. The first time this happened I changed USB Wires and it seemed to work. Now it is just not working at all with either wire. So aggravating...

Sounds like an internal switch or relay has failed. Not worth it to attempt repair. Were it me, I would open the case and recover the actual hard drive inside, it's probably still fine. For $25 you can buy a new external case to mount the drive in. This way you can save the data.

SOURCE: wd mybook lights flash and cannot acess drive

Just an FYI for anyone else with a similar problem. I had my buddy look at it and it was discovered that the problem was with the power cord.
If your hard drive is still under warranty, call WD and ask that they send you a new power cord. It worked for me instantly.

Worth trying anyway,

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. The hard drive could have been irreparably damaged. The chattering sound is the heads trying to find the beginning of the data sectors and can't. The drive will shut itself off automatically after a predetermined time period.

My Western Digital 1TB hard drives do not power up when plugged into the USB Ports. No Blue light no nothing. I am however using the same power cable. I have changed the USB cable.

Seems like your case power is broken, check your warranty or buy a new one. to get your data back, open the case and unplug your harddriver, plug your driver in a PC computer and remove your important data.

You could also test a new power cable because it seems like your case doesent get any.
