Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
So after a power outage when I plug in the harddrive into the USB nothing happens. the light on the unit is green. i can turn it on and off. i cannot see it under device manager. i hear no usb connect sound nor do i get any message.
also tried different wall outlet to no avail.
go into the control panel and click add/remove hardware... and manually add the device and then use the auto update to download the drivers

Sounds like an internal switch or relay has failed. Not worth it to attempt repair. Were it me, I would open the case and recover the actual hard drive inside, it's probably still fine. For $25 you can buy a new external case to mount the drive in. This way you can save the data.

Just an FYI for anyone else with a similar problem. I had my buddy look at it and it was discovered that the problem was with the power cord.
If your hard drive is still under warranty, call WD and ask that they send you a new power cord. It worked for me instantly.
Worth trying anyway,
