Question about Samsung SP-P4251 42 in. Plasma EDTV

1 Answer

Our Samsung SP-P4251 has sound but started showing white snow. Now it has progressed to no picture when we turn it on. Screen stays black but you can hear the sound clearly. Internal fuses are intact (used meter to test). Capacitors are grossly normal, but didn't use esr meter to test. The power light does turn on when plugged in and does blink when pushed, but all you hear is the sound (no video). Where is the fault?

I thought those parts are only on lcd tvs. Mine is a plasma. I'm not an expert, though. In any case, which board is it on my samsung? Thanks

  • alaniz1701 Nov 10, 2010

Is there any way I can which sustain board is faulty? Could it be anything else? Thanks

  • alaniz1701 Nov 10, 2010

How can I send a copy of the service manual to you? Something I just noticed....there seems to be a browning (almost looks like a burn mark) in the metal frame just above the top of the y-sus board. The y-sus board itself looks normal, though I haven't taken it off to look underneath. No burnt out parts are evident. Thoughts?

I found the manual here I replaced the y-sustain board thinking that was the problem, but it didn't fix it. I get sound but no video.

  • alaniz1701 Dec 20, 2010

I have replaced both y-sus and x-sus boards now and still have the same problem. Could it be the main board or logic board? Thanks

I finally got around to replacing the logic board and it still did not fix the problem. What is left to check?

Sounds like you either have a bad t-con on inverter board. Do you have a dull glow on the screen? You may have to darken the room to see that

OOps! Sorry about that did not read your question properly. My bad. Anyways the problem in your case seems to be a problem with the sustain boards. There are two of them in this set and usually its a good idea to replace them both. Component level repair is not possible(apart from replacing the capacitors) as there are too many solid state electronics on these boards. Really sorry for my blunder.

No it cannot be anything else, unless you have a problem with your controls(volume up /down, ch up/down etc.,) as that would indicate a logic control board failure. Ofcourse you can test certain voltages of the boards. You are gonna need a service manual for knowing the test points though. Unfortunately I do not have one for this model but you can get it from here.
Its the 11th or 12th from the top. There are 3 different versions so make sure you get the right one. Once you have it in hand I can guide you with the diagnosis to identify the faulty one if you can just send a copy across.

You can upload it to and get me the link. As for the burn mark, did you hear any popping noise? It is possible that the burn mark you are referring to is electrolyte that may have leaked out of a cracked capacitor. If you can also get me a highres picture of the y-sus board(take a pic with your camera and upload to get me the link, I can have a look with my eagle eyes and tell you if something looks fishy

If you read my second comment you will see that I have posted "There are two of them in this set and usually its a good idea to replace them both." That is why

It cannot be the mainboard, but it can be the logic board. Since you have already replaced the sustain boards, the logic control board is the only thing left

There is nothing else to replace. These are the only two things that can cause the problem. My suggestion would be to have these three boards tested by a tech and you will know which one to send back and get another.

I have sound on my samsung sp-p4251 EDtv but no video

Most likely the 22Uf 450v Capacitor has went out. It's on the Main Power Board. It's a decent sized cap, but not a huge one. Take to a repair shop if u want, or take the back off, plug in your hair-dryer & heat up that cap. Should have picture within 10-20 seconds of it getting hot. If it solves your problem, just find / buy that cap & solder it on. (Or have someone who can) Total parts approx-$20 (Including Soldering gun/iron)

The capacitor is about $3.

Samsunb 4051: TV screen turns off sound stays on.

Most likely this set has an "integrated" inverter, as most samsungs do--and this DOES sound like an inverter problem. Make SURE thought, there are no more bad "10 volt" caps on the power supply...ALL of them need to be replaced no matter HOW they look.
