Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I'm using an iMAC desktop 10.6.4 and I've purchased a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Drive on which I'm putting some projects. My computer frequently freezes when I use the external drive and/or I can't get the external drive to open. Was I supposed to install some software? What? Where is it? How do I do it? I'm not very familiar with the process, please help.

I tried it on another MAC and it worked. Then it worked on my iMac 10.6.4, opened, did the function I wanted, then it froze in that program. I hadn't had that trouble without this external drive. Do I need to do the work on my desktop, then take the finished project into the drive or can I do the work on the drive and just save it there?

Is this compatible with MAC? Does it make any difference which USB port I plug into?

Do I have to reformat? I'm using the MAC applications in this external drive. And, I'm using Photoshop Elements. Does that make a difference?

So far, working on the desktop first and then saving it to the external drive seems to work better. I'm going to try this more to be sure, not signing off on this right now.

Another question, if you please, and I'm sorry I'm so ignorant of these things. The projects on which I'm working are very important. Can I be sure that if I can save, view, copy them, they are definitely there? I can erase them from my desktop to make more room, right?

Thanks so much, I await your reply.

I reinstalled Photoshop Elements, copied what's on the external drive to the desktop, and am getting ready to erase the external drive using Disk Utility. Then I will put what I've copied on to the drive. Am I doing this correctly? I'm doing this because I got some sort of message saying I couldn't add the new things to the drive.

Am I making myself clear at all? Is this right?

I am so frustrated with this. I have taken off the Photoshop Elements from the Seagate external drive. Yesterday I talked with the trainer at the Apple Store (who also uses Seagate) and he told me it could possibly be it needed formatting. He told me how to do it, which I did today. I'm still having trouble.

He said perhaps it is that the supplied cord is for 3.0 speed, and my computer may not like that. The drive didn't come with firewire, nor 2.0 speed.

Again, I say, I'm not too knowledgeable about these things, but this ought to be lots easier than it is.

When I formatted, I copied the contents to my desktop, erased the drive, reformatted, then copied and pasted back to the drive. The cursor just did its spinning and spinning and spinning.

What do I do? Please help.

Hi. External Drives are plug n play devices. You dont need to install softwares or drivers to have this drives work unless it came with a driver disk when your purchased the drive. Try to plug in the drive to other computer and test if you will be getting the same problem. If you are not getting any problem using the drive with other computer then there might be a problem with your MAC Pc.

All the best!

Hi. It seems that you are getting the trouble only when you run that program. Have you tried reinstalling the program? try reinstalling the program first. Then as of the moment, you may try to work on with your desktop first. Once you finished the project you can save it to your external drive.

You drive is compatible with MAC OS. You may also try switching other USB ports.

Reformatting is not the best option as of the moment. Especially if you are only experiecing the problem using the program.

Make sure the you can open the files you have just copied from your excternal drive to your desktop before wiping out the external drive. If you were able to open the file then you are good to go to reformat the external drive.

Why does my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, 1.5 TB, external hard drive USB 2.0 make a clicking sound and will not connect to my Satellite receiver?

Does the drive work with a computer? This is an important test to determine if the drive is bad, or if it is an interface problem. Check the satellite receiver instructions for using external USB devices. Many times, these types of devices do not have interfaces with drivers for external hard drives.
