Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
Welcome to Fixya.
The reinstallation have caused the sound card driver to be wiped out somehow. You need to reinstall it. You did not mention what is your computer make but you can find the driver from your computer manufacturer's website.
Just go to the support page, look for the computer's model and look for the DRIVERS available for it. Click on download, usually it will say AUDIO or Sound card. Once downloaded, start the installation.
If you have questions, please feel free to come back.
