Hi,
Please see this FixYa Tip for a completely free alternative to Powerpoint.
The program includes an application called Impress which does the exact same thing as Powerpoint. When you are finished with your project just use 'Save As' to save it as a powerpoint file and it can be opened with any computer using powerpoint.
Best of all it is completely free for life. No trial period.
This solution was posted to another question someone else had asked on Powerpoint and appeared here for some reason.
However in relation to your query on MS Word you should still view the tip as the program is a suite of office tools and includes a free word processing program. If you want to save some money and have the same functionality as MS Word then it is worth checking it out.
