Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Maxtor 1Tb External Hard Drive that I have only used a couple of times on my PC - I did a full back up a few months ago and all was well. I added a couple of things to it a couple of months ago and again, all was well. I plugged it in to my laptop last night and although I heard the 'ding dong' noise made when the USB was plugged in, there is no sign of the drive in 'My Computer'. When plugged in it came up with the 'New Device Found' message. The light is illuminated on the front of the HD! Help - my life is on that HD!!!

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Computer will not recognise external hard drive

Here are a few things to try. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop, try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again. If it?s still not being recognized, Maxtor has a free utility called PowerMax (available at www.maxtor.com) that lets you run various tests on your drive till it identifies the problem.
Good luck!

My maxtor external 1tb hdd crashes my pc every time i plug it in.

format it, if it does not let you i have nothing further, if you have windows loaded on it... format and reinstall windows. Also make sure the host PC has NO maliscious software, run your antivirus and spyware protection on full scan for both, malware likes to get us frustrated and thinking things are broken when they are only being told to look broken... sooo... good luck!

(Its either programming or mechanical/electrical, if its not programming than I am sorry for your loss!)

External HDD is not working

You probably have conficker worm because it stops your pc from reading usb's or any external HDD. Or the worm might of infected your HDD since it spreads through usb and internet. Seriously you should get your PC scanned just incase. P.S. Its just a possibility.

option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty

Drive Wont format

First, because they came from the Lacie external drive, they were raided to look like a single drive. To format them inside your computer. You have to go into computer management to initialize each drive at a time and format them by right clicking on the drive and format

Maxtor external hard drive takes all system resources from pc

John,

I hate to be the one to say this but the reason you are seeing the spike in CPU usage when you connect the hard drive is because the computer is trying to read the hard drive and the hard is beginning to go bad, I would recommend taking the hard drive to a repair shop mom and pop type they often have the best rates and ask them to recover the data.

Treat the hard drive as if it were an egg bumps can make it very difficult to recover your data that you need. That is if you have any..
I deal with hard drives for a living this happens to my laptop and quad core desktop all the time but i am always able to get the data if they bring it to me before it gets worse

DONT RUN THE HARD DRIVE time is critical...

I wish you the best of luck

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....

Maxtor Personal Storage Unit 3200 - Model U01E100

it makes no difference how old the drive is, unless you transfer the same amount of content everyday and can chart and predict. It  might help to wrap your mind around the actually capacity and extent of files you trasfer and use. If that drive is a 200GB....1 gigabyte is roughly 1 cd and a half. A compact disc can hold 700MB, or gauge it to like a ipod.  So if youre possibly transferring say 2GB per day, you will reach the max of the drive in 3 months?

2GB X 90 days=180GB

If you are using graphic applications, or video...you may want to look towards a 320 GB or 500GB as things only get larger with current computers........Just 3 years ago, who knew what a gigabyte was? Now we own drive in upwards to 1TB ( terabyte ).

keep me posted..
