During setup you must have a RJ45 ethernet cable plugged, one end on your router and the other on the laptop.
Make sure on your laptop, that the Local Area Network Connection is "Enabled".
If it is "Disabled" Just double click on the icon to "Enable" it then try your Setup process again.

This should work.

This indicates that router can't detect cable modem or this is unresponsive, probably your modem is logically tied with your PC (MAC address associated), that's why when you connect them directly work fine, if this is the case, you'll have to clone the MAC address of your PC into your router, this should be at Setup Menu, Manage MAC addresses option.

The wireless card is configured for your D-Link at home.
You need to configure your laptop's wireless card for the wireless settings at work too (ie the SSID and encryption etc.). Contact the network manager at your work for the wireless configuration so you can configure the wireless card with these settings.
It maybe possible to setup different profiles on the laptop's wireless card, one for home and one for work so you can just click on the correct profile depending on your home or work location.

I never set up a password for this router but everytime i tried to conect to internet thru my laptop it asks me for a passowrd. is there anything like a universal password that i should use?

if its asking you for a wep key, you must go into the modems page and get it.

i think best way to find the modem page is goto start and in run type cmd, then type ipconfig, the default gate way is the adress to your modem page type this number with is some thing like 192.168.2.1 into your internet explorer page, this should bring you to your modem. navagate through this untill you find wireless settings and in there you will see the wireless wep key. if it ask you for a password try admin and pass admin or admin with no pass, you can google what your password is to this modem if you have a problem. hope this helps,

you do all this on the computer that is conected.

My wireless picks up my network but wont connect. It doesnt even ask for the pass key, which it does for other neighbour networks. I have just wiped my computer.

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

To access the Internet you need to connect the DSL or cable modem to the WAN (Internet) port on the wireless router

Hi, did you provide the network key/password when you setup the wireless conection on your computer? Is it detecting your wireless router (you should see your SSID or network name) when you click on your wireless icon (in the taskbar) and chose "show wireless connections". If you can acess to your router via it's configuration page(type the router's default IP address in your browser) you can go check the settings and change the key/passphrase if you dont remember it. If all of this is not working, you can also start from stratch. Reset the router to factory settings (check your manual) then reconfigure it the way you want, put the new infos in your wireless network connections properties and try again. let me know with more specific details if you still cant do it

does your laptop have a switch on the side or Fn key (blue icons on the F keys) to turn on/off the wifi.

Sometimes Fn + F2 will toggle the wifi on/off.

Post your make/nodel laptop and OS for more specific advice

I avoid using client utilities with wifi. In the conection "allow windows to manage connection" and see if you can connect
