Question about ASUS Eee 4G Notebook

1 Answer

I am trying to reformat my asus eee pc1005HA laptop. It is asking me for a CURRENT password, but Ihave no idea what I set it as over a year ago. When I called support they said they could only give me a master password to reset if I sent them my original receipt from where I bought the device (best Buy from over a year ago.) I dont have it.

Hi, thanks so much for your help. The laptop has windows 7 starter. It did not come with a re-installation disc (as it doesnt even have a disc drive.) However, I do have my own windows 7 installation disk and I am wondering if you could instruct me on how to create a usb stick from it. I dont have and external dvd drive, but I do have a desktop PC and plenty of usb memory sticks. Thanks again!

Hi. I just began the process you last instructed me on. When I was in the command prompt I typed list disk, but the only object/disk listed seemed to be my hard drive (112GB) at #0. I plugged in the usb stick to both the front and back of my PC, but it didnt appear to show up either way. Any suggestions? Thanks.

In that case you can't restore the machine from the recovery that comes with it, you would need either a USB stick or a USB dvd drive to perform the install from an original windows disc.

You did not say if the laptop has linux or windows 7 starter.

To reinstall windows 7 starter, you need to use another computer to make that special usb stick with the contents of the windows 7 DVD. Or you can use a USB CD-DVD drive to install from the windows 7 DVD.

Making the usb stick will be much more complex compared to using a external dvd drive.

I've written instructions on how to install windows 7 here

Before you go get into installing windows 7 from the external drive you need to enter the bios of the computer to change to boot order so that the USB CD ROM is the first device the computer attempts to start up from instead of the hard drive. After that you can follow the instructions on the above linked page. In the windows 7 setup you must select the version of windows that you have the key for, if the machine came with a w7 starter, you need to take that, since the key in the bottom of the laptop will only work with that edition.

If you have any questions or anything, add a comment and I'll respond as soon as possible.

Your going to need a usb stick with around 4 to 8GB of space. when I last did it It went fine into a 4GB usb stick but that was vista.

So your going to need the win 7 disc and a usb stick.

Plug in your usb stick and copy all the important content off of it.

open command prompt with administrator rights, by typing CMD in the start menu search box and hit CTRL+Shift+Enter (did windows 7 have this? Vista has the seach box in the start menu)

If you don't have a search box in your start menu, download this file and save it to your desktop. right click on the file on your desktop and select run as administrator, it will start CMD.exe as an administrator.

In the prompt write diskpart and hit enter.

Then type list disk, note the disk number of the flash drive. it will be the disk with size around 4000mb or 8000mb or 4 / 8 GB

lets say your pendrive is disk 3 (replace it with your own number)

Then enter the following commands in diskpart and hit enter

    Select Disk 3

    create partition primary

    select partition 1

    format fs=ntfs

Next insert your windows disc in the drive, find out what is the drive letter of your dvd drive and what is the drive letter of your usb stick then go back to the command prompt

Enter the drive letter of your dvd drive and hit enter like this for example if it was D drive then below (and don't forget" : " without the quotes)

    Next enter CD BOOT

write bootsect.exe /nt60 F: ((Where the F is your USB Sticks Drive letter))

Now we are almost done, copy your windows 7 dvd contents (everything from the dvd drive) into the usb stick

    Should work.

Sounds like your USB stick is faulty, try another one. 4GB should work.

Not remember password.

If your not running Windows, the first thing I would do is write to Asus and ask them if they left an administrator account on this machine. Most of the time if your using linux and you forgot your password. then you just have to reinstall Linux. Most Linuxs' have a root account that you could log into to do maintanance but if they disabled this account then your going to have to reformat everything. Linux is very secure but sometimes that works against you if you don't take passwords seriously.

How to reformat ASUS Eee PC 900 notebook?

I have the linux version, not sure if you have the windows version or if it really matters. If you are looking to "reformat", you can go with the other suggestions with the USB stick. However, if you are reformatting to get back to the default settings, power on the computer and immediately hold F9. This will bring you to a screen that gives you the option to "restore factory defaults". You will lose all your previous settings, but if you were reformatting anyway, that's probably not a big concern.
