the tv is in a locked up state. Will not accept any commands. Removing power to the tv for several hours will cause it to go back to normal operating mode for several days; then locks up again. The "power on" light stays lit and the tv has no video or audio and will not respond to any commands

This is a common symptom for TVs that have a power board that is going bad. The model number you provided is not familiar, but from the picture you chose I assume the TV is a flat panel.

You will have to remove the rear case and the inside shielding. Examine the power board for any buldged or vented capacitors. If none look vented you can take a chance on replacing them anyways, not all bad capacitors vent or buldge. If you are not good at soldering, order another power board from Viewsonic and install it. This should correct the problem.

See if the Horizontal out is good. If it is, then for safety measures, change that mosfet. If it does not fire up consider that the flyback is defective including some surrounding components.

Hello,

Good day to you.

Would you tell me if you have done this, and if not please do, remove power by removing power plug at your surge protector or wall socket.

Leave this power unpluged for about 30 minutes. While it is off, verify (I'm sure you have done this sir, but bear with me that your AV/Audio cables are intact and your Satelite and or Cable connectino is live with another portable TV (for example). Then unplug the receiver/cable box/satelite box.

Look behind your plat panel for any power circuit reset switch, plug or button. Instead of the HDMI cable can you bypass and use S-Video? to troubleshoot the HDMI is or is not an issue.

Once you have verified and or changed signal cables turn on first your receiver box, cable/satelite/tv tuner and they your LCD set. Enter the menus for your LCD TV and find then set the Master Rest or Reset factory defaults. After doing this power the system off again, by removing the power plug.

If in doing this your power on/off button on your set starts to work, let me know, if it still fails, let me know that too.

If you have done all these things on your own several times let me know that too.

Unfortuantely, I've seen this happen time and again and there is no user serviceable parts involved you will have to 'in the end of our troubleshooting' call your service provider and call in a tech. You will probably be given another set.

Did you experience an electrical storm prior to this happening.

Are you still under warranty?

Is your gear connected to a surge protector or a high capacity battery backup? Some use a Belkin 1000 Amp battery backup for all their powered units at their entertainment center. This unit runs around $100 or so through Costco or other discount outlets and are quite capable for powering your unit during brown outs and power loss.

Thank you for your time and response to all these questions.

Regards,
Worldvet

I had a similar problem. Fleeting video, then audio only for few seconds and then nothing except the green power LED blinking on and off.
I changed the power inverter board, backlight inverter boards and power supply board but still the problem is not gone.

Just 18 month old TV and out of warranty.

Now that we've ruled out the problem being your graphics card, could you try connecting the monitor to a different computer, using the same cable and a different cable?
