Leethedeuce is correct in this. I am a appliance service technician for sears. If you have oil like spots it means the transmission oil is going inside the washer. this is a common problem with maytags and kenmores, when the transmission goes. My guess would be someone overloaded it and it blew the transmission which is causeing the oil to leak into the tub.

this should goto leethedeuce for having the proper response.
dont attempt to keep using the machine as it can cause more damage to clothes and the unit. Call a whirlpool service center and have someone come take a look and fix it.

if you know its oil. No cleaning of the tub or inlet tube will help. More you run it the more oil ends up in the washer and less in the transmission. eventually the transmission will go and then instead of it having been a 4 dollar gasket its a 187$ transmission plus service fees.

id go with leethedeuce for having the proper Answer first.

Hi,

The oil or source of grayish coloration would have to come from somewhere. Possible areas/sources to look for would be:
1. water inlet/source; it is possible that the water source may have been contaminated and therefore soaked to the clothes being washed. You can verify this by going through the wash process without any clothes just to visually checked water clarity;
2. residual dirt/grime from other washing; previous wash could have clothes with the oil or the grayish substance and was not completely washed away. It may have stayed at the drain filter and floated back on this wash and stained the white clothes.
3. internal lubrication of the washing machine; though remotely possible, grease/oil lubricant of the rotating moving parts of the washing machine may have filtered back to the tub and stained the white clothes.

Solution would call for a thorough cleaning of the tub, water inlet, filters, drainage and all others where the oil/contaminant may have lodge itself. Additionally, you may want to check all others that are likewise placed inside the wash tub such as the detergent and softener for possible contamination.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Spots on Clothes

  • Chemical reaction between fabric softener and detergent. Test by handwashing a spotted garment in warm soapy water. If the spots come off, they were caused by fabric softener/detergent interaction.
  • Transmission oil leaked back into the tub. Test by applying solvent to a section of a spotted garment. If the spots come off only with solvent but not with soap and water, then they are oil spots. If the washer is a GE/Hotpoint, transmission will need to be replaced.

I think the water sensor is getting faulty.

check the nozzle also

else it can be the rubber rings of the cover which are getting eroded.

    i dont think its oil.

there is very little chance for that. i think it must be like some black spots right?

  • dewan nafees ahmed Jun 16, 2008

because this can be also due to some foreign particles which are stuck in the inlet nozzle.

if u have a look at them.

also did u make a dry run the machine in an attempt to solve this?

I purchased the Kenmore Elite washer approximately five years ago. I have had no problems with it operating. However, since purchasing this washer I have ruined almost everything white I owned and avoid...

There has been many reports of complaints regarding this problem and it was found out that the gray spots on white clothing are caused by the fabric softener. The Kenmore Elite is a "highly efficient" machine that it uses very minimal amount water when washing and rinsing. The minimal use of water results in the fabric softener not being diluted completely and eventually makes gray spots on white clothing. The ridiculous solution to this problem, as Sears "advised" is not using fabric softener for white clothing. But you may also try putting the fabric softener in a small plastic bowl just enough to hold it and place it inside the machine prior to the final rinse. Using only the suggested amount of detergent and avoiding the use of detergent powder with speckles reduces the possibility spot occurrences in your while clothing.

All our whites are now greys washing with our GE WCVH6260

graying of clothes is usualy caused by / serveral things . too much soap / washer not rinsing properly / and gas dryers. change your dergt. use one with a bleach in it . and use 2nd rinse ( cold water ) make sure washer drains wash water completly . do this by cking the drain pump clean out .. if cloged it will slow the drain cycle and you will be rinsing with the wash water . also use H E dergt. . if dergt is still in clothes when drying this turns nylon yellow and whites gray .. .also seperate colors . and whites .. **** ..

White Clothes Turning Gray FAST - Maytag Performa Top Loader

This is from not enough HOT loads.

Fatty deposits gather between the basket and tub during COLD washes.

Then they are being released in large numbers when you do your whites on HOT.

It is recommended to do 1 HOT load per week.

Do an empty load with some degreaser added (like Goo-Gone) on the fullest/hottest setting you have.

That is exactly what it is, grease. It is coming from the transmission past a worn or defective seal usually the transmission will have to be replaced.

Leaves white clothes gray

Many of the machines are having a similar issue I am trying to find a resolution to fixing this, there are two issues. First Whirlpool has just recently identified a problem with premature bleach dispensing. Another dispensing problem I had is that fabric softener had to be diluted otherwise it would not wash out of the dispenser. And finally, the fabric softener dispenser would still hold a small amount of water after the wash cycle completed.Removing the top of some washers I have found that there is often a lot of stainless steel polish residue around the rim of the machine - which should have been cleaned away before the machine was shipped from Whirlpool. The gray, oily residue was not visible without removing the top of the washer. Knowing now what has caused the dark gray streaks on many peoples laundry.

Washer is turning my white clothes gray

Oil from transmission is a good possibility. The machine is still young but sounds like you do a lot with the washer. Better have a friend that don't mind looking it over, make sure that's oil and go from there!

Clothes are not clean How can I take washer aprt to clean soap dispenser???

Dear carolesergy,
Welcome to fixya

You sad,My clothes get dingier ever week from using my washer especially the towels. They are now Grey and not white

1.Here are some ideas and INFO!
2.How old is your MAH5500B washer and did you buy it new?
3.Do you use HE High Efficient detergent?
4.Do you ONLY put the proper amount of detergent directed to be used by the manufacturer?
5.Using to much detergent will degrade the seal and eventually destroy the bearings.
Which will cause oil to leak out on your clothes and sometimes make gray stains on them !
6.Is there tiny gray oily pieces in the wash and on clothes?
7.Look closely at your rubber seal around the opening. Is this worn or deteriorating away slowly due to bleach or detergent? Is it a gray or black rubber?

Please have patients and bear with me, with all these questions I propose to you here!
"
I am searching with your eyes for things I have seen in the past about this model"

Here are some reasons this may also happen!

How large of a load can I wash in my Maytag Neptune washer?
* The tub can be loaded completely full with dry, unfolded clothes. However, do not pack the tub tightly. If the load is heavily
soiled it is very important not to overload the washer.

My whites are not as white as I’d like. What can I do?
* Wash white loads using the cotton/sturdy fabric selection. Select the hot wash/cold rinse temperature setting and put 3/4
cup of chlorine bleach in the bleach dispenser. The bleach will be dispensed in the final minutes of the wash providing for
optimal whitening. Maytag recommends a hot water wash temperature of 120-140° F (49°- 60° C).

Also:
*The lint filter in side the machine may be clogging with dirty lint!
*Which means you needed service!

I hope one of these solutions is the reason!
Let me know how you do!

Black oil or grease on clothes after washing

is you machine a top loader or front loader? if its a front loader the black marks could be from the boot. WIpe the boot with a good cleaner. and try not to over load machine. and if it a top loader your transmission is probably leaking oil back into clothes tub. You could have it rebuilt $$$ or better replace the machine.

Whirlpool calypso GVW9959Q - Black stains on whites

At the end of the cycle, the wash plate nutates for
approximately 30 seconds to fluff the clothing after the
final spin. The action of fluffing causes the outer wash
plate seal to rub against the stainless steel basket while
they are both relatively dry. This condition causes the gray
discoloration.
RESOLUTION:
An updated machine control, part number 8542693, is
now available. The updated control reduces the fluff time
from 30 seconds to 8 seconds, allowing the clothing to be
fluffed, without causing discoloration.
Gray marks or smudges can be washed out of clothing
after wiping down the basket. The consumer should use
the recommended amount of HE detergent and the hottest
water safe for the fabric or hand wash the garment under
running water. In either case, the fabric must be cleaned
prior to running through the dryer
