Hi I get the message that my MP180 requires service now, error code 5800. Have previously received the message that the ink catcher is almost full. Tried the solution suggested on this site pressing menue copy scan copy copy, but don't get anything but the require service now message. Is there anything I can do to fix it, or should I just buy a new printer? Hope you can help Charlotte

Sometimes, we manually need to clean the waste ink absorber, means you need to remove them and wash them... Follow the steps :
1. Open the top of the Printer and look inside.
2. Locate the waste ink absorber pads. These are at the bottom right inside your printer.
3. Put on the gloves. Now remove the waste ink absorber pads and holder from the printer by gently lifting them out. It feels like they snap out, so do not be afraid to tug gently to remove them.
4. Clean the waste ink absorber by soaking up the ink with a tissue or wipe. Set the waste ink absorber on some newspaper to avoid ink spills.
5. Go back to the Canon printer, and view the other waste ink absorber. This is also on the right-hand bottom in the back of the printer. This one has screws to remove and comes out with a plastic piece.
6. Wash the sponge with clear water. Allow it to dry completely. This may take at least a day. When it is completely dry, reassemble.
7. Replace the waste ink absorber pads and sponge. Connect the printer to the power source.

Good luck.

If you need further help, let me know.

I am getting an 5800 error

Ink Absorber Replacement OptionsThis printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible. Press the <OK> button to release the error. You will still be able to print for a short period. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.
Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk
