Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Vista security I have the Geek Squad coming out tomorrow. My son gave me Norton o8 security program to have him isnstall. My question knowing the vista security built in, do you think that is way to much added to a already vista problem? Should I just get norton anti-virus program or a different one on nothing? Need to know so I am ready for his formating work.

Go to Microsoft.com and use Windows One Care. It works better in Vista and will optimize performance better than Norton will. You should download Windows Defender as well.

That should be all the Anti Virus software you need.

Norton takes up a lot memory to run and it slows your computer down. Norton hasn't been very reliable about getting all viruses removed. Windows One Care will take care of most issues on your computer and take care of performance matters as well as viruses and potentially unwanted programs.

It's a good deal too if you want to continue using it after 90 days.

No if you ask me, Norton 08 should be perfect,....
Vista bby itself is not all that secure.. its good to have additional antivirus program and Norton 08 is in no way less effective than other programs out there.

have no doubts at all, proceed onto instal Norton.. thats the rights thing you do

BEST BUY GEEK SQUAD ROUND-UP

I can confirm that this level of incompetence is quite common. It is Best Buy's standpoint that Geek Squad is an extension of their sales strategies, thus their hiring practices reflect that standpoint. Many Geek Squad "Agents" are hired or transfered to Geek Squad based upon their merits as sales people, NOT technicians. This strategy, combined with the pathetically low pay level (which any certified or experienced technician would laugh at) results in untrained staff programmed to follow certain sales strategies. In my experience, many of my fellow employees were on the same technical level as the customers across the counter seeking support.

Best Buy did settle with Winternals / Sisinternals and integrated many of their tools into Geeks Squad's authorized repair disk (Much of which is purely automated). At some level, Best Buy has internally recognized that their Geek Squad staff is mostly unqualified and have catered their corporate licensed / developed software to reflect the situation. This not only showed Geek Squad's incompetency (again) but also shows how news media is more interested in scaring you than actually helping you. It's good that the big chains got this bit of negative press on a local station but you should also applaud the store that did it for free - at least post their name and address and show an interview with the owner or clerk.

Mom and pop shops are usually run by people that are hobbyists first and business-folk second. Whenever someone at my company asks for personal computer help that I don't care to deal with I send them to a small shop in our town - one with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Netscape Navigator and Word Perfect stickers are mostly-faded on the window. I know they'll be treated honestly and fairly. No charge just to examine a computer to add onto the actual repair.

It's sad how many people/companies are more interested in making the most money from a problem instead of trying to solve it fairly.
and LASTLY "1st thing that video is at least 8 years old I remember seeing it when I was young in highschool."
Perhaps you are thinking of the PC World investigation of major retail computer service departments? I remember reading it long ago:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3764-6/pc_repair_ripoff.html
The article is from Mid 1998. A damaged IDE cable was part of the problems on their test PCs.

From the article:
"Of 55 problems tested across 20 stores, a total of 30 were misdiagnosed, ignored, or went otherwise unfixed. Best Buy and Computer City each missed on 9 of 15 tries."

THE REAPIR WE WERE TALKING ABOUT WAS A 10 TO 20 DOLLAR FIX :()

AND

A confidential settlement has ended litigation initiated by Winternals over copyright infringement regarding Geek Squad's use of its ERD Commander software.

The lawsuit should end following a July 7th motion from Winternals lawyer David Weaver, who cited a settlement agreement reached between the company and Best Buy, which owns Geek Squad.

Instead of a lengthy lawsuit, Winternals now has a three-year agreement in place with Best Buy. This will permit its Geek Squad of tech assistance personnel to lawfully use licensed programs from Winternals and Sysinternals. This includes the ERD Commander system recovery tool.

The problems for Best Buy and Geek Squad started in February 2006. Winternals had conducted training sessions for Geek Squad employees, as part of its negotiations with Best Buy to license software for its 12,000 Geek Squad workers.

Then the negotiations ended abruptly. Coupled with the admission from employees of Geek Squad and Best Buy that they had been using unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, Winternals began to investigate.

They set up systems needing repair in multiple locations, and put calls in to Geek Squad for assistance. Geek Squad staffers either used unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, or had them in their possession.

In April 2006, Winternals sued in US District Court in western Texas for copyright infringement, circumvention of copyright protections systems, and misappropriation of trade secrets.

I sent my laptop to a geek squad and they errase everithin, I want to know how I recover my norton antivirus that I allready pay for it for one year

You should be able to go to Norton's website and get a copy using your password and user info. If you no longer have that your email might be enough as long as you registered your copy in the past. If you can look through your programs files using explorer, you might be ablet o find the reinstall program. But, if I were you I would hold the geek squad responsible, because fixing these sorts of things can get very difficut. and confusing .

Normally, if you gave been hit with a major Viurs I would recommend that you get all your data off and reinstall.  It is the only way of really being sure that the system is clean and fully operational.  Take a look at AVG instead of norton.

A.R.C.H.I.E. is the demonstration software used on all Windows-based PCs sold at Best Buy that are used as demonstration units. The software is not designed to be installed on any PC other than those being used within the store.

Unfortunately, the removal of A.R.C.H.I.E. without the original disc (which is provided monthly to the stores from the corporate offices) is going to be nearly impossible. You have two solutions in this case:

1. Utilize the PC's recovery methods (most likely recovery partition, however you might have a model that came with recovery discs as well. The A.R.C.H.I.E. software prohibits most recovery disc creators from working properly). Note that for this method to work, you must be able to start the recovery process outside of Windows.
2. Bring the computer (along with its AC adaptor, if it is a laptop) to any Geek Squad precinct (any Best Buy store or standalone Geek Squad) for uninstallation of the A.R.C.H.I.E. software (without damage to the underlying operating system). This should be a free service as it is THEIR software running that requires removal for normal operation of the computer, and per company SOP should have been removed prior to sale. This is the preferred method, however you might not have access to a Geek Squad precinct and need it done before you will have access to a precinct again.

Windows host process rundll32 has stopped running in Vista System

OMG! there are tons of reasons NOT to use the geek squad. I get geek squad victims in my shop every week. This can probably be figured out remotely- but if it came from BB- I would just about BET it is norton, or spysweeper as the root of the problem, or perhaps an incompatable program on Vista. There might be a problem with the motherboard too- and checking on Dell's site to see if your unit is in warranty will yield a free tech support from thm if the service tag shows a valid warranty. If replacing Norton and spysweeper with a less problematic program like AVG FREE edition (which works a lot better and is FREE!) does not help- there are other cheaper local or nationwide helpers that can fix this remotely (like me)

E-Machine-Microsoft office product code

Hi DeLaunay,

The product key that ships with E-Machines computers for Office is a trial key that is provided by Microsoft for a 60, 90, or 120 day trial. If that key was misplaced, a trial can be obtained directly from Microsoft at their Microsoft Office Trial website:

http://us20.trymicrosoftoffice.com/default.aspx

If a full version of Office was purchased along with the PC and they key was misplaced then you will have to contact Microsoft Support for a resolution. Their information can be found at the following link:
