Question about Bose Lifestyle 20 System

1 Answer

I have a lifestyle 20 system. All the fuction works on the main unit. Could not get any sound out of the Bass unit or any of the 5 speakers. Checked all conections are good and tight. Sound works good with head phone jack. The unit would sometimes work for about 15 seconds then cut out.

Is there any way to take system apart. Do you know how much it would cost to repair the unit. Would be worth to fix it?

This is a sign that the internal amplifier has failed... These units are made in a way that they are not able to be worked on or repaired by the end user. You will want to contact BOSE to get this unit repaired... I can confirm though that the internal amp has definitely gone bad, I have seen it numerous times on the Lifestyle 20 systems and they have these exact same symptoms.

Call BOSE at 800.905.2138 Monday-Friday 8:30a-9p, Saturday 9a-6p ET.

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

They designed this unit so that it can't be disassembled by the customer, it's quite annoying really.

It will be around $200 is my estimate to repair, probably worth it seeing as the system is worth so much.

How do I hook up my lifestyle 20 . I bought it second hand and my speakers have wires.

Hi Mark,

I'm assuming you have the original speaker cables that came with the system (it looks like the connectors on the small speaker side are not standard connectors). If that is the case, the two smaller speakers should connect to the Left and Right 'Output to Cube Speakers' plugs on the larger subwoofer box. A 3rd cable from that subwoofer box should connect from the "audio input" connector on that box to the to the "Speaker zone 1" plug on the main unit.

Plug both the main unit and the subwoofer into power outlets, turn them both on and you should be all set. If you click on the link below, pages 7 - 8 of the owner's guide have a good description and pictures of this configuration. The rest of that guide may come in handy too.

I hope this helps,

Not good surround sound Is the bose lifestyle 5 support 5.1 surround sound?

The Bose Lifestyle 5 is not a 5.1 surround sound system. It is a 2.1 sound system, meaning it is stereo with a subwoofer/bass unit. Having two speakers that can be angled in different directions, the Bose Lifestyle 5 employs Bose direct/reflecting technology, providing greater audio presence. Still, it is definitely not a surround sound system.

There is power to the unit. But we can not get any sound. the remote works. tried mute nothing.please help

Make sure that your speakers are plugged in correctly and wires aren't shorting out. also try plugging your equipment into another input on the unit. Make sure the any switches on the Bass unit (subwoofer/Amp) are switched on.
Good Luck!

Bass/Treble balance on Bose Lifestyle 5

You need to go into your menu and set the "MOVIE EQ" to your liking. That is where your bass/treble balance is on a Lifestyle system.

Bose lifestyle 5

Hi,

I cannot exactly solve this issue but I can make a comment based on investigation. Lots of people have this issue but there are very few comments to help solve the issue unfortunately.

I have the same issue and have been able eliminate various things because I have a second complete Bose Lifestyle 5 system.

It is clear the issue does not lie in the Sub and is related to the Music centre unit. I can use a second identical music centre to power my sub just fine and my broken Music centre cannot drive my second sub.

Now the issue is knowing where to track down R428 in the music centre which is the suggested fix to this issue. I have opened my unit and there are resistors various Resistors in the 400 range but no R428.

If anyone can help with the location of R428 in the Music Centre I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Jeff

Bose - Custom EQ Error: 10

Hi, I have just had the same problem and the advice from BOSE was to turn everything off and disconnect the sub from the main unit, wait 10 mins and turn everything back on, making sure to turn the sub on first.

As it happens i then noticed I had connected the sub via the BOSE link speakers plug to the main unit rather than the correct "MAIN" socket. - so if you are reading this you know I am a fool! But the sound now works.

Basically BOSE confirmed the reason for error 10 is that the main unit is not detecting the sub and speakers.

Anyway, I hope my foolish mistake, helps save time and blushes for anyone reading this link.

Lifestyle 20 bose

by main unit i assume you mean the head unit or the CD control unit.

the answer is YES,

bose sell a part that will conect your ipod to you r bass box direcly ( or at least they used to) it was not passily powerd by the ipod however as the i pod can't maintain the current necessary to sustain the power up of the amp's control circuit. so it was powered externaly.

the answer is. you need 5 v dc at 500ma capacity on the centre pin to power up the bass module and thus bring the bassbox to life, the remainig pins carry L/R and a control voltage to adjust the volume, i will need a bit of time to find out which pins exaclty do what, as i cant remeber off the top of my head, but i'll bet you'll find the answer on a diagram if you do a search on the web. please also note that the 5vdc can also be varied between 1.5vdc and 8.5 vdc to adjust the volume of the bass box and the system overall, and so that is the major problem for you to solve if you want to build your own amp. ( maybe get your hands on a second head unit ( CD 20 ) cheap on ebay or something or spalsh out and buy a remanufactuerd one from bose. but maybe thats not what you had in mind .
:-) have fun.

Volume

I had this problem and checked the main wire going from console to bass unit, it was loose from where I had moved the unit to insert another device (RCA Jacks). Apparently if the wire from the unit is loose, it over - rides the volume and by default adjusts it to 30. Additionally, I reset the system console and bass unit console, during this process. Try this, it might fix your problem.
